Rickel***
Everything needed to be perfect today.
"Rickel, are you ok?" Amir's nanny asked for the tenth time.
"Yes. I am fine." I lied. I was a nervous wreck.
Reese moved back in with me and after a couple months, I forced her to quit her job at Wal-Mart. I shook my head. She never lets me forget how stubborn she really was.
I told her that, since we were now a family, I was going to hire a full time maid. She was having none of it, insisting that she wasn't going to allow anyone to 'take care of her man' for her. In the end, all I could have her agree to was a nanny for Amir. Even then she had an opinion. Once she is home, she hardly lets the nanny, Marissa, do anything.
"Rickel. I'm not going to allow another woman to raise my child." She had snapped at me.
With all her stubbornness, there was still not a second thought in my mind. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.
"Rickel?" Marissa called to me. "You're pouring salt into your coffee."
"Oh shit." I hissed my teeth and decided to brew myself another cup. I needed to control this anxiety of mine. It's turning me into a clutz.
Marissa laughed. "I'll make the coffee for you Mr. Nichols. I don't want you wasting any more of the salt."
I chuckled lightly. "Yea, you're probably right."
I allowed Marissa to take over and went to the living room to watch something funny so I could calm my racing mind.
After drinking my coffee, I took a shower and got ready for my day. It was a Sunday and Reese was out with Gaby. My mom had Amir and I had my fast beating, nervous heart.
My phone rang just as I was putting on my shoe.
"Yes Mom?"
"Get to the hospital now. Amir is all stringed up."
My heart was racing as I got to the car and rushed to the hospital.
Reese***
It was a beautiful day. Gaby and I were at a spa courtesy of Rickel. (Of course he has no idea that he's the one paying for it.)
"I'm glad things worked out the way they did." Gaby smiled at me. "Amir seems right at home here."
I laughed. "Sometimes I get jealous. I think Amir loves Rickel more than me."
Gaby rolled her eyes. "So? Would you prefer he hates his father?"
I pouted. "Well, no. But he has more fun with Rickel than he does with me. Rickel is supposed to be the boring one."
"Reese, can't you enjoy life for a minute? Even when you have no problem you try to make things up."
She was probably right. It's just that I'm so used to having problems all the time. It's just weird when I don't. I always keep wondering what bad thing is going to happen next.
We got our pedicures done then went to have some lunch. Gaby was texting on her phone and not paying me any mind.
"So who's the mystery guy?" I smirked at her.
She didn't get a chance to answer as my phone began to ring. It was Renae.
"Hello?"
She was breathing heavily and her voice shook when she spoke.
"Reese....it's Amir."
I was on my feet instantly. "What? What happened to him?"
"He's in the hospital. You need to get here now. I'll text you the address."
She hung up and with my hands shaking, I packed up my things to leave.
Without asking any questions, Gaby was already packed and heading to the car.
"What happened?" She asked once we were on our way to the hospital.
"I don't know! I don't know!" I shouted at her. "Amir is in the hospital! Dammit!! I'm trying to call Rickel and he won't pick up. ¡Dios mio! God please let my baby be ok."
Gaby tried to calm me down. "Breathe Reese. I'm sure it's nothing too serious."
"Nothing too serious??! He's in the freaking hospital! Of course it's serious!"
My eyes were getting cloudy with tears when Gaby pulled into the hospital's parking lot. I didn't wait for her to park. I opened the door and jumped out while she was still driving.
The lady at the counter directed me to the room where Amir was and I rushed toward it.
I pushed the door opened and there he was, lying on the bed with tubes and strings everywhere.
"Amir! Oh my God Papi! What happened?"
He was clutching a small teddy bear near his face and I couldn't see his reactions. He must be in so much pain.
I rubbed his head. "Tell mommy where it hurts."
He smiled at me as he played with the teddy bear. "It doesn't hurt mommy."
They must have him on so much pain killers. I inspected him to see if he had any wounds but I couldn't find any.
"Mommy? Do you love my daddy?" He asked sounding very concerned.
"Yes I do baby."
He pouted. "Then why won't you marry him?"
I smiled at him. "It doesn't work like that Papi. Maybe your daddy isn't ready to get married. But if he asks me, I'll say yes."
Amir was smiling from ear to ear. "Ask her daddy! Ask her!" He shouted as he sat up and some of the tubes came loose.
What the heck? How much drugs do they have him on? He was looking at something behind me so I turned around.
I gasped.
Rickel was on his knee with an open ring box looking up at me. "Well should I still ask since you already said yes?"
I covered my mouth. I couldn't believe this was happening.
"Reese. I have never loved anyone the way I've loved you. I think from day one we were destined for each other. You were made specifically for me. I mean, who else would put up with my crap? Will you marry me Reese? If you say yes, I promise to do everything in my power to make sure you're always happy."
They say when you're about to die you're whole live flashes before your eyes. Everything that led up to this moment was flashing before my eyes.
"Yes." I answered and let the tears flow freely down my cheeks.
He placed the ring on my finger, then got up and gave me a light kiss on the lips.
"Yeah!!" Amir was jumping up and down on the bed.
Just then, the curtains on both sides of the bed opened.
"Congratulations!" Everyone yelled. Rickel's mom and dad were here, co-workers from his job, Mrs. Francis and her husband and.....
"Mom?" I couldn't believe it. Rickel flew my mom here for the proposal. I rushed over to her and engulfed her in a hug.
"Congrats darling. Didn't I tell you this guy loves you?"
I nodded as everyone congratulated me with hugs and gifts. There was even a cake! Amir wasted no time in tasting the frosting.
I walked back over to Rickel and I couldn't stop kissing him. He had made me the happiest woman in the world. I really hope I can make him happy too.
