Reese***
"Good morning." Rickel smiled at me.
"Good morning baby." I kissed his lips. "What would you like for breakfast before leaving for work?"
"Can I have bacon and eggs with some toast?" Rickel tried to hide his smile. I knew I made him feel special just like I planned.
"Sure honey." I kissed him on the forehead and went to take a shower.
The guilt was now eating me alive. I just buttered him up to leave him. That wasn't fair of me. I know how much it is going to hurt him but I need to move out.
I looked after his breakfast and we ate together. I chose this moment to tell him of my plans for today.
"Uhm...Rickel, can I talk to you about something.....without you asking a lot of questions?"
"Sure. Go ahead babe."
I took a deep breath. "I'm taking a mini vacation today. I'm going to visit some of my old friends. I'll be back by tomorrow morning."
"Where do these old friends live?"
"Not far from here." I answered vaguely. I really hated lying to him.
He folded his hands. "And do these friends have names?"
I sighed. "You promised you wouldn't ask questions. Can you just trust me on this please?"
He exhaled. "Fine. Just please keep your phone on you at all times so I can reach you."
I kissed him. "I will if you promise not to put a tracker on my car again."
His face was starting to look like a ripe tomato. "I don't know what you're talking about." He got up to put his plate in the sink. "Ok I won't."
"Thank you baby. I'll go get ready. Do you need me to do anything before I leave?"
"Give me a repeat of last night. Please?"
I laughed at his childishness. "Sure. As soon as I get back I will."
A smile spread across his face. "Go now so you can come back quickly. Please don't keep me waiting too long."
On hour later I met with the realtor to find a good apartment to rent. Gaby took the day off to help me search. Personally I think she just loves looking at new apartments.
"So you told Rickel you are moving out?"
"Nope. Not yet. Is this bathroom a little to small?"
"Reese. Stop trying to change the topic. When are you going to stop stringing the man along. You're going to break his poor heart."
I chuckled. "He'll be fine. I'm just moving out. That's all."
Gaby placed a hand on her hip and the way her lips curled into a serious frown made me know that the conversation was about to get serious. "Have you told Rickel about Amir?"
I ignored her question and admired the bathroom features. I was really in love with the modern shower head. I think this is the apartment I'm going to rent.
"Reese?"
"Hmmmm....."
"Let me ask you something. If you had to choose between Rickel and Amir to spend the rest of your life with, who would you choose?"
I sighed. "I love Rickel but..... Amir is my heartbeat. I can't live without him."
"I suggest you tell Rickel about it today, before he finds out from someone else."
Gaby was right. God I hate when she's right. I'll tell Rickel everything once I get back from my trip.
We settled on the apartment, I paid my first and last month rent and we were all set. All I had to do now was buy furniture and appliances.
"Are you going shopping now.....or browsing at least?" Gaby asked gleefully. "I think we should stop at Ikea first. They always have some great stuff."
"Sure." I gave in to her as I backed out of the parking lot of my new home. I felt so proud of myself.
Three hours later we were back at the apartment followed by a delivery truck. Gaby insisted I buy everything today if I had the money. That girl was seriously living vicariously through me.
"So how does it feel to have your own space?"
"It feels amazing Gabs. I can't wait to finally move in."
Gaby smiled. "I remember when I rented my first apartment. I was in college then and picked up shifts at a diner. I bought a bed and a refrigerator first. Of course I couldn't do the splurge shopping like you just did. I would make sure to eat at the diner every night and carry home leftovers for my breakfast and lunch the next day. Gosh I was so adventurous then."
"You're still adventurous now. You made me buy everything today!" I shoved her shoulders.
"My friend there's a difference between being adventurous and being persuasive. You really need to look into a dictionary sometime."
I rolled my eyes at her. "Whatever. I have some place to be so I'm going to lock up now. Can you get out of my house please."
"Oh. So you're forgetting the little people now, huh. Ok ok. I'll leave but don't come running to me when your rent is due."
I laughed at our bickering. We could be actors if we put our minds to it.
I drove Gaby back to her apartment and gave her a hug. "Thanks for everything Gabs."
"No problem honey." She stepped out of the car and locked the door behind her. "Wait..." She stopped me before I drove off. "Where are you going now?"
Of course she had to ask.
I kept my eyes on the steering wheel. "I'm going to spend the night with Amir."
Gaby sighed. "Be careful Reese. I really don't like the neighborhood he lives in. It's dangerous."
"I know. I'll be safe and who knows, maybe he can move in with me once I've settled in." I drove off, not giving Gaby a chance to respond.
Six hours later, I pulled up into Mrs. Francis' yard. It was already dark and I could see them watching tv. I stood outside and watched them for a while before knocking on the door.
"Hey Reese! You finally made it!" Mrs. Francis greeted me.
I gave her my bags and took a seat beside Amir. He was pouting. "Why did you take so long to come back?"
"I just got caught up with work but guess what? I'll be spending the night here."
Amir looked to Mrs. Francis. "Is she joking?" He asked and Mrs Francis shook her head.
Amir kissed me. "I love you."
And I felt his love. It was warm and tingly and it made me feel wonderful inside.
Mrs. Francis chuckled. "Now I have a warning. I'm getting old now so could you guys please keep the screaming and hollering at a minimum for me tonight?....and please do not damage any of my furniture."
Amir and I both laughed at her. In all honesty, I couldn't wait to just cuddle with him tonight.
