Rickel ***

It's funny how life works out sometimes. Last year I had no idea I would have fallen in love with someone to the point that I want to marry them, let alone a maid.

The feeling was incredible. Knowing that I finally had someone who loves me despite all the mistakes I've made and is willing to put up with all my bullshit. Reese is just too amazing. Sometimes my paranoia kicks in and I start wondering if there's something I'm missing.....if she's really the person I've come to love. Then other times I feel way too lucky to be paranoid.

"Hmmm......someone is in love...."

I sat up straight in my chair more aware of my surroundings now. I was in my office and Gaby was smiling at me like a lunatic.

"Is there something I can help you with Gaby?"

"Aww...." She placed a hand on her chest. "You're still in that phase."

"What phase are you talking about?"

"The phase where you're so in love that you forget about everything and everyone else around you. You're just in your own tiny bubble of love."

Now she was just making stuff up.

"Gaby could you please keep your nonsense to your self....and don't you have work to do?"

She was still smiling. "Yes, I do actually but you called me to your office and I've been standing here for the last five minutes watching you stare at your desk."

Oh damn! I was really in too deep.

I cleared my throat. "I'm really sorry about that. My mind has just been very preoccupied lately. Have a seat. I have something important to run by you."

She gave me a queer look. "Is it work related? Because I can tell you this job means a lot to me and I've been doing my very best to make sure this place runs smoothly."

"You're not been fired if that's what you're worried about." I hated that that was her first assumption.

"Whew! I was about to fall to my knees and start begging. I really love working here. Well I don't particularly enjoy working alongside Janelle but we stay out of each other's way for the most part so that's good......Ok I'm going to shut up now." She took a seat and folded her lips.

I really don't know how Reese manages being around her. She talks way too much for my liking. Now I'm starting to wonder if I should bring her in on my plans.

"Can you keep a secret?"

"It depends. What kind of secret?"

I shook my head. I asked her a simple yes or no question and she gives me a complicated answer.

"A personal one.....one that involves Reese."

Her eyes went wide. "Oh my. You're going to tell me a secret about Reese. Are you breaking up with her? Is something wrong with her? Is she sick? Is she pregnant? Oh my God! You got her pregnant and now you don't want her to keep the baby. Oh my God. This is so messed up."

"It's nothing like that. Stop making bad assumptions." I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Gaby can you please just listen for once and stop talking?"

She pretended to zip her lips as she leaned back in the chair. She seemed a little winded from all her chattering.

I exhaled. "I'm going to propose to Reese and I need your help."

She let out a squeal as she bounced up and down on the seat. "Oh my God! Oh my God! That is so amazing! I can't wait to see the look on her face. Oh my Gosh! You guys are going to be so cute together!" She whipped out her phone and started typing away.

I grabbed the device from her and locked in away in my desk.

"What was that for?" She whined.

"What were you doing?"

"I was just texting Reese to see if she was ok.....or if she was feeling down so I could cheer her up."

I raked my fingers through my hair. I should have listened to my conscience when it told me not to say anything to Gaby.

"I knew telling you was a bad idea. Just forget I said anything."

"No no no no! I'm so sorry. I was just a little too excited. I'm all calmed down now. What do you need me to do?"

Now that the question was asked, I'm starting to realize that I haven't given it much of a thought. How the heck was I going to plan a perfect proposal? What kind of proposal would she like anyway?

"I need you to think of ways I can propose.....and please Gaby, try not to say anything to Reese. This is supposed to be a surprise."

Gaby rubbed her hands together. "Don't worry your head pretty boy." She whispered. "I'll make sure Reese isn't suspicious of anything and I'm going to plan the best proposal for you."

I handed her phone to her and she left the office. As she opened the door I heard tumbling and Janelle fell to the floor.

"I'm sorry. Were you leaning on the door?" Gaby asked her.

She scooped up the pages that fell from the file she was carrying. "You did that on purpose Gaby!" She fumed. "That is not good work ethics. I can't see why you were hired in the first place. You are so spiteful."

Gaby folded her hands. "So it's my fault you can't walk in six inch heels? Please forgive me Janelle. I am extremely sorry."

I pursed my lips trying now to laugh and it came out sounding like something between a cough and a sneeze.

Gaby left and Janelle walked over to my desk clutching the file in her hands. "Uhm.....Good morning Rickel...."

"Good morning Janelle. Is there something I can help you with?" I started clicking on random things on my desktop. Janelle was showing way too much cleavage today and I wasn't about to mess up what Reese and I had.

"Yes.....but I think congratulations are in order?"

I glanced up at her. "And what's that for?"

"Oh I heard you were going to propose to Rita....Rissa....what's her name again?"

I decided not to let her play her games with me today. The fact that she was eavesdropping on our conversation says a whole lot about her.
"Yes I am." I smiled at her. "Thank you for your congratulations. I'll see to it that you get an invite to the wedding."

Her mouth fell open but no words came out. A few seconds later, she coughed trying to regain her composure.

"Is that all?" I was ready for her to leave. I didn't have time for all the drama right now.

"Oh..... your mother is in the lobby. She says she's here to take you to lunch and you shouldn't keep her waiting."

"Thanks. Tell her I'll be down in two minutes."

When Janelle locked the door behind her, I threw myself back into my chair and sighed. When did my life become a reality tv series? I can't imagine what problems my mother is about to stir up now.

I drank a glass of water, grabbed my keys and phone and went down to meet her. I was absolutely not ready for whatever she was about to throw at me.
