Rickel***
I took a deep breath as I stood outside the door contemplating what I should do next. Last night I was sure I wanted to know if this was where Reese lives. Now as I stood in the empty hallway at six in the morning, all that confidence was gone.
My hand went up to knock for the third time then fell to my side again. Why didn't I wait around last night then confront Gaby? For all I know, she could have been on a date or something. Her new boyfriend could be the one she came to see last night.
"Should I call the cops? You have been standing there for quite a while now." It was the same woman from last night.
"That won't be necessary. I'm here to see a friend."
She folded her arms and stared at me. "Well, get to it. You can't be loitering in the hallway."
My hand went up involuntarily and knocked the door. The lady was still standing there as if I had just lied to her.
"Coming!" Her angelic voice sang from inside the apartment and I felt beads of sweat forming on my forehead. I didn't lose Reese. She was only a few meters from me and my anxiety was through the roof.
The door opened slowly and I held my breath. Her hair was in a messy bun and she was focused on picking something off her blouse.
"Hey." Her eyes met mine then they went wide. "Rickel?"
I decided to pretend I was angry at her. "So you had me sent to jail huh?"
Her silence was amusing. I almost smiled when I watched her mouth open and close searching for something to say.
"Well aren't you going to invite me in?"
She nodded. "Sorry. C-come in."
The place was small but clean. I sat on her couch and she offered me a cup of coffee.
I took it, trying to hide my nervousness from her. I wanted to just kiss her sweet lips so badly.
She sat across from me and folded her arms on her lap. She glanced toward her hallway a few times as she waited for me to talk.
"So this place is more comfortable than my house?"
She sat upright. "No. But none of your family members can put me out."
Her smart mouth was making me love her even more. I sighed deciding to discard this facade I was putting up.
I placed the coffee and the table and sat beside her. As I took her hands in mine, her expression went from feisty to fearful.
"I missed you so much." I gently pulled her to me so our lips could collide. She was adamant at first but after a few seconds she started to relax.
She let her hands roam over my body and I was in heaven. How did I even survive this long without her?
As her lips traveled to my ears, I let out a small gasp. Maybe I should propose to her right here, right now. There's nothing that's holding me back now. My mother has finally approved her.
I slid my hand under her blouse as I pulled her into my lap. Her body felt perfect beneath my grip and I was hungry for her.
She pulled away suddenly and placed her hand on my chest to prevent me from advancing toward her.
"Rickel stop."
"What is the problem?" I wondered why she was acting so strange.
She glanced toward the hallway again and I started connecting the dots. The 'problem' must be in her bedroom. How could I have been so foolish? She isn't working. She must be living here with a guy. There's no way she could pay bills without a sensible job.
"What is the problem Reese?" I asked in a much harsher tone as I rose to my feet.
"There's something I have to tell you." She didn't try to hide the nervousness in her voice.
"I'm sure you do." I looked at her scornfully and she held her head down possibly in shame. "So I'm in the idiot chasing after someone who doesn't love me right? Foolish Rickel! My mother warned me! Everybody warned me but I didn't listen. I could have saved myself this God damn heart break. How could you have moved on so quickly Reese? Didn't you love me at all?" My voice softened and I could feel the tears threatening to fall.
"You raped me...." She said softly.
"I know. I'm really sorry about that. I'm sure in time we can move away from that hurt. I wish it never happened."
Reese smiled. "I'm happy you raped me that night."
"What?" I was taken aback by her weird comment. "Why? What do you mean?"
I couldn't understand her. Was she somehow going crazy? She couldn't possibly mean what she just said.
"You see, there's something I have been hiding from you. When you raped me that night, he gave me a part of yourself."
"Reese, are you ok? What do you mean?" She was confusing me more with each passing second.
Her smile widened and it was starting to scare me. "Turn around."
I slowly did as she told me and I was looking at a small boy. His features reminded me of my baby photos. Wait a minute....
I looked back at Reese. "Are you serious? You were pregnant?"
She nodded and I had to sit down to let it all sink in. I have a son? He must be at least two years old by now and Reese hid him from me for so long? I didn't know what to think. My mind was a bit hazy.
Reese went to get me some well needed water and the little boy came and sat beside me.
"Hi." He said happily with a warm smile that melted my heart. "Are you going to play with me today?" He cocked his head to the side waiting for me to answer.
"Rickel has to go to work Papi." Reese said as she handed me the water.
The little boy pouted. "But I want him to play with me."
I took the water in big gulps, my eyes never leaving him. I was almost scared to be beside. My heart was beating wildly in my chest. It was a weird feeling.
Reese made his breakfast and put him in front of the tv. We went to the kitchen to talk.
"So.....his name is Amir and he's going to be two years old next month. I'm sorry I kept you in the dark about all this. I was confused and didn't know what to do."
My knees felt weak and I held onto the counter for support. I didn't even know how to react. Should I be happy that I have a son? Should I be angry that I'm just finding out about him?
"Rickel are you ok?"
I cleared my throat. "Yea. I am. I just need a moment to think."
I called Gaby to have her cancel all my appointments for today. I was emotionally unstable to go to work. I needed time to think.
Reese and I have a whole damn lot to discuss.
