March 8th, 1991
TACOMA WASHINGTON
-

It was official Friday. The day we'd.... or the day we planned to tell everyone the so called "exciting" news. I was so nervous I couldn't stand still. And thankfully, I wasn't feeling any symptoms yet. And I know it depends on the person but I wasn't expecting it to be just painless.

Dave had a gig in Tacoma today, and then two more in Olympia. So, we'd be busy today.... I just hoped we'd find a right time to tell them.

"Have I ever asked you what your favorite song is?" Dave asked me. We were sitting on this couch in this lobby room. We were at some old collage where they'd go on for a couple hours.

"No." I laughed at the question.

"Well, what is it?" Dave asked.

"I don't know," I thought about it for awhile, "anything by Duran Duran, really." I said speaking the truth.

"Duran Duran. Huh...I wouldn't have guessed." He looked surprised. I shook my head at him confused by why he was so interrogative about this.

"Hey, stranger. Haven't seen you in forever." I heard that voice. That voice. The only voice that sounded as soft and fabulous. I turned my head and looked over with a smile to see Kurt and Courtney. I really hadn't seen them in forever.

"Hey, guys!" I happily said standing up. Courtney threw her arms around me in an instant. It had been at least 3-4 months.

"Oh, no. The besties are back together." Dave mocked from the couch. I gave him a sarcastic look before quickly hugging Kurt. He was laughing at Daves remark. I wanted to just tell Courtney right then and there, but I couldn't. Not just yet. Maybe I'd wait till the boys were gone.

"So... I heard about you two getting a house. How exciting!" Courtney said. I didn't want to draw too much attention to myself so I replied with a simple nod. If she thinks that's exciting how will she react to.... ya know.

"Guys. You go on in ten. Where's Chris?" Danny (their manager) but I called him by his last name Goldberg, said walking out from a back room. I looked around to in fact notice Chris wasn't anywhere.

"Oh, shit. I don't know." Dave said looking at his watch. Everyone was beyond confused. Chris never missed a show, in fact he was always early.

"Well, he better here soon. Or you guys can't go on." Goldberg looked very nervous as he spoke. What would happen if Chris didn't show up?

"I can call Shelli?" I offered looking to the wall phone next to us. Kurt nodded quickly.

I dialed her phone number quickly.

"Hello?"

"Hey, it's Dani. Do you know where Chris is?" I asked twirling the phone cord around my finger.

"I thought he was with you guys? He's not?" Fuck. Of course she didn't know.

"No. We've been waiting for a couple minutes. He isn't showing." I said biting my lip.

"Shit, Dani. I don't know. I'm back home... he's not with me."

"Thanks anyways, Shelli. I'll call you if he shows up okay don't worry." I said calmly.

"Okay. I'll talk to you later." Shelli said with her voice shaking slightly. I felt terrible for her, I couldn't imagine what she felt like. Not knowing where her husband was.

"She doesn't know." I said sadly walking back to the couch. Everyone cursed under their breath.

"5 minutes guys." Danny said looking paler than usual.

"Courtney can you play the bass?" Dave asked her. She shook her head with a sarcastic laugh.

"No way."

"How about Dani. Do you know how to play the bass?" Kurt asked. I felt all eyes burn onto me. What the fuck? I couldn't...

"I- I played the cello in high school. But, I—"

"Okay. Looks like we've got ourselves a bass player." Kurt clapped his hands together.

"What? Dani can't play in front of people!" Dave cried.

"He's right. I'd... make a fool of myself!" I whined. Kurt didn't listen but pulled me over to the red and brown bass standing on its side.

"Cello chords," he handed me the huge bass, "are bass chords. Just the cello is like a guitar." Kurt sounded like it was just fine but I was screaming inside.

"Kurt I really don't know if I..." I didn't finish my sentence because Kurt walked away and jotted some things down on a piece of paper.

"Look. If you were playing cello.... do you think you'd be able to play this?" I nodded at his words.

"Then there you go. Just try and stay in line with me and Dave you'll be fine!" Kurt brushed it off.

"Come on, Dani. You can do it!" Courtney cheered with a laugh.

"Are you fucking kidding me? I can't play on stage with you guys. You've gotta be crazy!" I exclaimed to their obviously not sane manager with sweat pouring down my face with nervousness.

"Danielle. Either save this entire show and play one or two songs in front of everyone. Or be the person who stopped everyone's concert." He said looking at the clock. Two minutes until they had to go on.

"Hold the phone. It would be Chris' fault! Besides, they aren't here for me to play the bass!" I whined still holding this stupid bass guitar. Dave was on the couch with his hands together in a begging motion. Everyone basically looked to me for a way out of this mess. And I guess I really didn't have a choice in this moment.

Fuck my life.

"Fine. But, if you make fun of me, I'm breaking up with you."
