We walked down the hallway until we reached room 314.

"Do you want to go in first?" I looked up at Damien who was holding my hand again.

"No. Come in with me." He opened the door slowly and we walked in.

The room had the same white theme with a few plants. However, the curtains were closed so there was not a lot of sunlight coming in. I could hear the faint sound of a TV behind the curtain I saw.

"Mama," Damien whispered once we reached the bed.

I saw an elderly lady laying on the bed. She had dark hair that was slowly greying. The woman was dressed in a light pink nightgown and her leg was in a cast that was propped up on a pillow. Even though she looked exhausted, she was still very beautiful. I could see many of the features Violet shared with her.

Evelyn didn't say anything, but it looked like she was trying to read us.

"It's me. Damien." My boyfriend slowly walked us closer to the bed. He still held onto my hand tightly, almost as if he was scared I would disappear.

"Damien." She whispered. "Damien?"

"Yes, Damien. Your son." He had a different voice when talking to her, it was very calm and patient.

She took time to look at Damien, taking in all his features. Then she moved onto me. I smiled as she stared at me, trying to figure out who I was.

"Damien! My son!" She exclaimed.

"Yes, mama." I saw Damien smile.

Evelyn stretched out her hand. "Come here."

I slowly let go of Damien's hand and nodded, giving him the reassurance that I was right there.

He placed the flowers on the side table and he held her hand. "How are you?"

"I'm fine." She smiled.

"How is your leg?" Damien asked.

"My leg?" She questioned and looked down at her legs. "Oh mio! How did that happen?"

"You fell, mama." Damien gently brushed away a strand of hair on her face.

"Oh." Evelyn brought her attention back to me. "Who is that?"

Damien stretched out his for me and I stood next to him. "This is Naya, mama. She is my girlfriend. La mia ragazza."

"Hello, Ms.Caputo." I smiled and waved.

She let go of Damien and reached her hand towards me. "You can call me Evelyn. Come on. I don't bite." She waved her hand and I took hold of it.

"I hope your leg heals fast, Evelyn," I said.

"My leg?" She looked down again. "Oh, right. I am fine. It doesn't even hurt."

"She's a very pretty girl, isn't she Damien? Molto bello." Evelyn looked at her son with a big smile and I blushed.

Damien smiled and looked at me. "Yes, she is, mama."

"You're very beautiful yourself, Evelyn." I complimented her.

She let go of my hand and scoffed. "Ah, no. I am getting old. My hair is grey and my face is getting wrinkles."

"Don't say that, mama. You're still beautiful." Damien rubbed her shoulder.

"Oh, stop. Bring those chairs and sit down." She pointed to two chairs on the other side of the room.

Damien went over to get the chairs and I stood by the bed.

"Where is um...V-V..." Evelyn struggled to remember.

"Violet?" I asked.

"Yes! Violet!" She exclaimed.

"She couldn't come. She was feeling sick." It was true. We had asked Violet if she wanted to come, but she was feeling sick and decided it was best to stay home.

"Oh." She nodded.

Damien walked back with the two chairs and put them next to the bed. He sat down closer to his mother, and I sat next to him.

"Do you need anything, mama? Water? Are you hungry?" Damien asked.

"Stop worrying, mio figlio. I am alright." She reassured Damien. "Tell me. How long have you been together?"

"A little over a month. But we've known each other for longer." Damien looked at me, and I nodded and smiled.

"How did you meet?" She smiled.

Damien and I both started talking. We looked at each other and laughed.

"Let the girl talk, Damien." Evelyn patted his arm.

I explained how we ran into each other outside the store. Damien told me she knew about the gang, so I didn't have to hide many details.

"Wow! That's quite the love story." Evelyn said and we all laughed. "Damien. Can you get me some water? I don't think there are any more bottles in this room."

"Yes, mama." Damien quickly stood up. "I'll be back." He put his hand on my shoulder and then walked out of the room.

"Come here." Evelyn pointed to Damien's seat which was closer to her. I stood up and sat down in the chair. "How is he?"

"Damien is fine, Evelyn. You don't have to worry about him." I gave her an encouraging smile and held her hand.

"I know. I just worry about him. I may not fully remember everything, but I still care for him very much." The woman looked down at her lap.

"He's strong, Evelyn. And he doesn't blame you for anything. He told me about how great of a mother you are. Don't worry about him. He has so many people in his life caring for him. Violet, Rocco, and me. I will always be there for him." I smiled.

She brought her other hand over to sandwich my hand between hers."My son is very lucky to have you. I've never seen him so genuinely happy around someone and care for anyone so much, other than Violet and me. Please don't break his heart."

I brought my other hand to put over hers. "Never. I would never do that. I love him too much."

"I can see that. What you two have is something you can never take for granted." Evelyn said and I nodded. "Now." She smiled. "You said R-Rocco, right? He's the troublemaker, right?"

I laughed. "I guess you could say that."

"I honestly don't remember much about him, but he always used to get in trouble and his mother would always scold him," Evelyn said and I laughed. "You need to find him a girlfriend."

I nodded and smiled. "I'll try."

"What are you guys talking about?" Damien came back with a couple of water bottles.

"Rocco." I turned around, and Damien just shook his head and chuckled.

We continued talking for about 30 minutes or so. Evelyn could remember most people's names, but she struggled to recall anything else about them.

"We should get going, mama." Damien stood up and I did as well. He leaned down and kissed her forehead.

"Ok. Visit again. And bring Violet next time." She said.

"We will. Bye!" Damien took my hand and we headed for the door.

"Bye, Evelyn!" I waved.

"Bye, Damien. Bye, N-Naya! Right?" She said.

"Yup!" I gave a thumbs up.
