Chapter 13: Lies to Get Out

They go to the location where the Minutemen were last.

"Apex of nexus signature located, ma'am," Mobius said to B-15.

"Let me ask you this, why don't we just travel back to before the attack, when the Variant first arrives?" Loki pointed out.

"Nexus events destabilize the time flow. This branch is still changing and growing, so you gotta show up in real time. Did you watch any of the training videos you were supposed to?" Mobius said.

"Well, as many as I could stand. Your TVA propaganda is exhausting," Loki answered.

"Tell me about it," Jamie remarked.

"And what do these do?" Loki asked.

"Reset charges prune the affected radius of a branched timeline, allowing time to heal all its wounds. Which sounds like a nice way of saying disintegrate everything in its vicinity. He's on it," Mobius answered.

"I watched the videos. I mean, some of them," Loki told him.

They then entered the tent and looked around for any clues.

"So he's taking hostages now?" B-15 asked.

"The Variant's never taken a hostage before," Mobius pointed out.

"Maybe he's upping his game," B-15 suggested.

"Or he pruned her," one of the Minutemen commented.

"A Loki couldn't have gotten the jump on C-20," B-15 said.

"I think you underestimate, actually..." Loki started.

"Fan out and search for her. And hurry up, we're at three units until red line," B-15 interrupted.

"Let's go. She's right," one of the Minutemen agreed.

"Come on," Mobius ushered.

"Wait...If you leave this tent, you'll end up like them," Loki pointed out.

"What do you see?" Mobius wondered.

Jamie was also curious of this.

"I see a scheme, and in that scheme, I see myself. We have a saying in Asgard," Loki started.

"'Where there are wolf's ears, wolf's teeth are near'," Jamie quoted.

Loki looked at her, clearly impressed with the fact she knew this.

"Yes. It means to be aware of your surroundings. Which is absurd, because my people are, by nature, gullible fools. A trait that I, the God of Mischief, exploited time and time again simply by listening. My teeth were sharp, but my ears even sharper," Loki explained.

"We're running out of time, Mobius," B-15 said.

"Hold it. Just give him a chance," Mobius told her.

"You remind me of them. The Time Variance Authority and the gods of Asgard, one and the same. Drunk with power, blinded to the truth. Those you underestimate will devour you. You underestimate me, just as you underestimate this lesser Loki. Which is why, you walk into one wolf's mouth after another," Loki explained.

The device the minutemen had went off.

"Two units. He is wasting our time," B-15 replied.

"Okay. Come on, Loki, make a long story short," Mobius urged.

"We need to look for C-20," B-15 remarked.

"That's exactly what the Variant wants you to do. It's a trap. He's waiting for you outside this tent," Loki informed.

"Should I secure the reset charges?" Mobius asked.

"No. He wants me. I'm the key to his plan. He knows that I'm stronger," Loki told them.

"Almost one unit," B-15 informed.

"And he rightly believes that together we can overthrow and rule the TVA. But that's not what I want. I have a new purpose. I'm a servant of the Sacred Timeline. And knowing what I now know about his tactics, I can deliver you the Variant, but I need assurances," Loki continued.

"Yeah?" Mobius asked.

"Assurances that I won't be completely disintegrated the moment the job has been done," Loki replied.

"Right..." Mobius nodded.

"We'll need to speak to the Time-Keepers at once. They're in graver danger than we realized," Loki whispered, only to where Mobius and Jamie could hear.

The device went off again and Jamie facepalmed at this.

"He's lying. Just playing games. There's no one out there," Mobius said.

"Reset the timeline," B-15 commanded.

"You had me for a second. My ears are sharp too," Mobius remarked.

As Mobius walked off, Jamie tapped Loki on the shoulder, to which he turned to her.

"Not your best work," she commented.

"Just a minor setback," he said.

"I hope you're right. Because for us to take over the TVA, we have to actually put the effort into this case," Jamie replied.

"Then let's do it," Loki told her.

The timeline was then reset.
