The three of them made their way to the ark, Loki and Jamie without their jackets and rolling up their sleeves.
"You know, I don't think I've ever walked this much in my life," Loki commented.
"That's a pretty good life," Sylvie responded.
"Debatable," Jamie said.
"Well, you're lucky you missed it. Here's an idea. What if you enchanted me and you could walk for both of us? Or I take a nap in my subconscious, and then you could just wake me when we arrive. Yeah?" Loki suggested.
"Yeah, that's not how enchantment works," Sylvie shook her head.
"All right, how does it work?" Loki asked.
"Doesn't matter," Sylvie answered.
"You know, I feel like I've told you so much about me. And I'm sure Jamie has. We really don't know the first thing about you," he commented.
"Thanks for the tactical advantage," she remarked.
"Ah, so, you want to use that tactical advantage to kill us when the TVA shows up," Loki stated.
"Worried, are you?" Sylvie remarked.
"We just need to know if we can trust you. At least fully," Jamie said.
Sylvie knew they had a point with that.
"Okay, fine. You want to know how enchantment works. I have to make physical contact and then grab hold of their mind," Sylvie replied.
"How?" Loki and Jamie asked.
"It depends on the mind. Most are easy and I can overtake them instantly. Others, the stronger ones, it gets tricky. I'm in control, but they're there, too. In order to preserve the connection, I have to create a fantasy from their memories," Sylvie explained.
"And you call me a magician," Loki commented.
"That young soldier from the TVA, her mind was messed up. Everything clouded. I had to pull a memory from hundreds of years prior, before she even fought for them," Sylvie continued.
"What? What'd you just say? Before she joined the TVA?" Loki asked in confusion.
"Yeah. She was just a regular person on Earth," Sylvie informed.
"A regular person?" he wondered.
"Loved margaritas," she added.
"I was told that everyone who works for the TVA was created by the Time-Keepers," he mentioned.
"That's ridiculous. They're all Variants, just like us," Sylvie remarked.
"They don't know that," Loki told her.
That got Jamie thinking.
"Well, since you trust me more than him, I think that's enough reason to trust you with a request of mine," she said.
That made them stop.
"What do you mean?" Sylvie asked.
"You said you pulled a memory from C-20 to get information from her. Is there any way, just in case we don't make it, that you can pull a memory from me so I can know more about my past?" Jamie asked.
"It's possible. But knowing him, he would want to join you to make sure I don't try anything," Sylvie said.
"You would be right," Loki remarked to her then asked Jamie, "Are you sure about this?"
"I don't remember anything since I started the TVA. This is the only way I can think of to find out," Jamie answered.
"Alright," he nodded and held his hand out.
She placed hers in his and looked to Sylvie, nodding at her. They then closed their eyes as Sylvie activated her magic on Jamie.
Then they opened their eyes to see a lot of memories in front of them. Some from when she was a child, some from when she was a teenager, then some from when she was an adult. There were a lot of happy memories with people who looked like her parents and siblings. It finally came down to one specific memory.
Loki and Jamie witnessed an invasion of Kree in Alabama.
"What is this?" Jamie asked.
"I'm not sure," Loki answered.
"Out of all the memories you saw, this is the strongest; how you were brought into the TVA," Sylvie's voice sounded.
They watched the Kree take out everyone until a young woman came into view, coughing like crazy.
"It's..." Jamie started, her breath shaky.
"You," Loki finished in shock.
Then she ran, a Kree after her. They followed her until they saw her stop and a family of four on their knees.
"No!" she shouted.
Then just before those four were killed, a portal opened and snatched the young woman away.
The memory shifted to show the TVA and Mobius with the young woman on the ground, her struggling to get away.
"Whoa! Whoa. It's okay. We won't hurt you," Mobius assured.
"Who are you and what is this place?" she asked.
"My name is Mobius and this is the Time Variance Authority, but we like to call it the TVA," he answered.
Then Jamie and Loki were brought back, gasping for air. Then she started tearing up, making Loki hug her.
"I'm really sorry," Sylvie said.
"I am too, darling. but I'm curious. Why do you think Mobius saved you? Even though I'm glad he did," Loki wondered.
Jamie took a shaky breath then said, "My death wasn't important enough to start a branch in the timeline. But he could've done that with anyone. I need to know from him."
"Alright. Then let's go," Sylvie instructed and they did so.
