The Variant, Loki, and Jamie made their way across Lamentis, trying to find any other sign of life.
"So, what's the plan?" Loki asked.
"There's a town near here. And can you shut up? Just because I have to work with you doesn't mean I wanna hear your voice," the Variant remarked.
"Well, at least someone here does," Jamie commented to herself, but Loki heard it, which made him blush.
"All right, well...Slow down, Variant," Loki ordered as he and Jamie tried to catch up with her.
"What part of imminent death confuses you? And don't call me 'Variant'," the Variant stated.
"I'm sorry, but I'm not calling some faded photocopy of me 'Loki'," Loki told her.
"Good. 'Cause that's not who I am anymore. I'm Sylvie now," the Variant replied.
"You changed your name. Brilliant," Loki remarked.
"It's called an alias," Sylvie said.
"It does make it easier to tell you two apart," Jamie commented.
"It's not very Loki-like," Loki responded.
"Yeah? What exactly makes a Loki a Loki?" Sylvie challenged.
Loki sighed and answered, "Independence, authority, style."
"So, naturally you two went to work for the boring, oppressive time police," Sylvie remarked.
"We don't work for them. I'm a consultant. Jamie understood the TVA is full of it for a long time," Loki said.
"You two don't know what you want," Sylvie declared.
"Oh, yeah? What about you? Your years-in-the-making plan was to tear the place down, create the ultimate power vacuum, and then just walk away. I'd never have done that," Loki explained.
"Yeah? Well, I'm not you. Can we get on with this now?" Sylvie stated.
"You are literally no fun. At least I got to know the entertaining Loki," Jamie said.
"What a lucky woman," Sylvie remarked sarcastically.
Jamie rolled her eyes before looking at Loki, who just shrugged.
They made into the very deserted town.
"It looks like everyone already fled," Loki commented.
"If they did, it was in vain," Sylvie remarked.
"How long do we have?" Loki wondered.
"Twelve hours or so. Things down here are only gonna get worse. More meteors, gravity quakes, and of course, the collapse of society in the face of annihilation," Sylvie explained.
They went to one building with a light up sign.
"Could that charge the TemPad?" Jamie asked.
"Maybe," Sylvie answered, ran to it, and said, "I'm just checking the coupling. Making sure it can connect."
"Right," Loki nodded.
"Okay. Hand it over," Sylvie said.
Loki snickered then remarked, "Pitiful. I'm not giving it to you. You're gonna have to try harder."
"We're a lot smarter than you think, Syl," Jamie added with a smirk.
"Then don't give me your 'tech savvy' ideas either. The TemPad requires a massive power source, not a night light," Sylvie said before they left it.
They then approached a shack and Sylvie headed toward the door until Loki grabbed her arm.
"Brute force is no substitute for diplomacy and guile," Loki said.
"Noted," Sylvie remarked, yanked her arm back, and continued to the door.
"This oughta be good," Jamie commented.
Sylvie then kicked the door down, but was shot back by a shockwave by a woman with a huge cannon-like blaster.
"It's remarkable that you ever made it as far as you did," Loki commented.
"Sorry about that," Jamie apologized.
"Don't be. I enjoyed it," the woman said.
"Oh," Loki said, chuckled, then added, making Sylvie scoff, "We did too. But I can assure you, despite our acquaintance behaving like an animal...uh, we mean you no harm. We're simply weary travelers."
"Sure you are," the woman remarked, not buying it.
Loki then noticed a picture of the woman with a man, so Loki shape-shifted into the man with a sigh.
"Oh gosh," Jamie commented.
Then he stepped into view, making the woman hesitate for a moment.
"Hello, dear," he said.
"Patrice?" the woman questioned.
He started sobbing and started, "It...It's been a long time. You're as beautiful as..."
Then he was blasted back, making Jamie cup her mouth in shock and Loki shape-shift back.
"Patrice never said a thing that nice in 30 years. You're no travelers, you're devils," the woman grumbled.
"Which one was that? Diplomacy? Or..." Sylvie asked with a chuckle.
"Don't. Just don't," Loki remarked.
Then Jamie stepped in front with her hands up in surrender as the woman readied her weapon.
"Hold on. We really don't mean any harm. Even though my colleagues have..." she started, looked at them, then added as the two tricksters lightly glared at her, "questionable methods of doing so, we just want to ask some questions. Where is everyone?"
"The ark. The evacuation vessel," the woman answered.
"Something like that would have enough juice to repower the TemPad," Sylvie said.
"How do we get there?" Loki asked.
"Train station's the edge of town. But you'll never get a ticket," the woman remarked.
"Come on, let's go," Jamie ushered to them then told the woman, "Thank you."
They then made their way toward the train station.
"Thank you," Loki told Jamie, making her smile.
He then nudged Sylvie, who rolled her eyes.
"Thanks. Even though I could've handled it," she said.
"Right. Because you totally handled it when you had your ass handed to you," Jamie commented, making Loki chuckle and Sylvie scoff, then added, "But I'll take what I can get, so you're welcome."
