From the other side of the volley ball net, Elizabeth and Darren looked wide eyed at something behind Wyatt and Allie.
"What is it?" Wyatt started to ask when he was cut off by a very familiar voice.
"Need a few more players?"
Turning around, they saw that Robert Downey Jr. had addressed them. And standing on either side of him were Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth.
Wyatt's heart jumped. He'd thought that the morning beach adventure was just a fluke. But here he was again, this time with his cast mates. When Chris had suggested they all hang out he hadn't completely believed it would happen. And certainly not so soon. Really, he thought it was just Chris being friendly. Saying something for the sake of filling space in a conversation. Being polite. People did that sort of thing all the time.
"Sure!" Allie said. "We were just setting everything up."
"Great!" Evans said with a huge grin. "So, I guess we pick teams?"
Mark raised a hand. "We've got an odd number. Why don't I sit out and keep score."
With that detail decided, they discussed how to choose teams.
"Are we doing our house against yours or do you want to mix the teams up?" Darren asked.
"Let's mix it up," Evans decided. He turned to Mark and told him to pick a number between 1 and 100. "The two closest get to be team captains."
Darren and Jeremy were the winners and first pick came down to a coin toss that saw Darren winning.
"Guppy, get your ass over here," Darren called out.
Wyatt jogged over to him and stood at his side.
"Guppy?" Chris asked Allie and Elizabeth.
"That's the nickname his family gave him," Elizabeth explained. "We all call him that."
Chris grinned and decided that had to be the most adorable thing he'd heard about Wyatt yet.
"I'm going for the height advantage. Hemsy, come on down," Jeremy said. When Chris got close he smiled and whispered "nothing more fun than crushes playing against each other, right?"
Wyatt whispered to Darren for a few seconds. Then Darren called for Evans to join them.
"Gotta break things up a little bit," Darren explained as Evans joined them.
"Also," Elizabeth said. "Allie should not be on the same team as Guppy. It would be totally unfair."
"Yeah, they're way too good together," Darren agreed. "Like, freaky good."
"It's scary," Elizabeth confirmed.
"Really?" Chris asked.
"They're both really competitive and they get super intense," Elizabeth explained with laugh.
"In that case, Allie's with us," Jeremy announced.
Downey folded his arms over his chest. "You know, I'm starting to take this personally," he joked.
"We'll take Robert," Darren said.
"Which leaves Birdie with us," Allie said as she welcomed Elizabeth with a high five.
Having formed the teams, the ball was knocked into the air and the game was on. The entire time the ball was being pounded back and forth across the net, Chris watched as Wyatt's body moved across the sand. He took notice of the sweat that dripped from him, his lean muscles glistening and taut with action. He noticed the fiery determination in him as he played. With each volley, Wyatt grew more competitive, which turned Chris on quite a bit.
When Chris jumped up and smacked the ball across the net, Wyatt slid across the sand, popping the ball into the air and sending it back over the net. Using his height and position to his advantage, Chris jumped up and hit the ball again, sending it into the unguarded spot Wyatt had surrendered when he'd slid to the ground.
Wyatt moved to stand and Chris smiled and winked at him, slow and deliberate. "Eyes on the ball, mate," he said as he backed away from the net with a huge grin on his handsome face.
Wyatt felt his body respond and he shook it off. Don't read into that! This is all just a fun game. That's all.
"You good?" Darren asked quietly as he moved up beside Wyatt.
"I'm good. Chris Hemsworth is throwing his balls at me," Wyatt whispered. "I'm living the dream."
Darren exploded in laughter, attracting attention from everyone else.
"What's so funny?" Allie shouted from across the net.
"Just Guppy being Guppy," Darren replied with a huge grin as he picked up the ball and prepared to serve.
The game quickly resumed and Wyatt fought every urge to watch Chris as he played. Similar to that morning, he noticed that seeing the man in pictures or on film was one thing, but seeing him up close and personal was an entirely different experience. He really was as big as he looked.
Chris jumped into the air and Wyatt's eyes drifted down his abs, past the V shape of his hips and below his waistline, watching as a very noticeable package bounced with his movement.
Sweet baby Jesus in a manger; he's big all over. Really big.
It was at that point that Wyatt felt the smack of the volleyball on his forehead. Stunned, he stumbled backwards and fell on his ass, throwing sand up around him.
"I'm so sorry, mate!" Chris yelled as he ran underneath the net and hurried over to offer a hand.
"HEY!" Robert shouted in playful outrage. "Foul ball! Penalty shot!"
"Hate crime!" Evans called out.
"Are you alright?" Chris asked, worry coloring his features. "I didn't hurt you, did I?"
"I'm alright, just wasn't paying attention," Wyatt admitted as he took Chris's hand and was pulled up to his feet. He kept a grip on Wyatt's hand, his fingers subtly rubbing his knuckles before letting go.
"You sure?" Chris softly asked.
"It's not like you to get distracted in a game," Elizabeth pointed out with a wink.
"Yeah, Guppy, what were you paying attention to?" Allie asked with playful accusation.
Wyatt cut a discreet glare at her. "I'm alright," he announced. "Let's go."
Chris gave one last look at Wyatt and then jogged back over to his side of the net.
"Nice one, Hemsy," Jeremy muttered under his breath. "When you're trying to get a date you usually don't hit them in the head with a ball." He paused and grinned. "You have to at least buy him dinner first."
Chris shook his head and grinned over his shoulder. "I think something distracted him." It hadn't escaped his notice that Wyatt had been staring at his body when he'd jumped.
"You mean dick-stracted him," Jeremy whispered. "His eyes were drinking you in the entire time."
Chris smiled confidently before returning his gaze to Wyatt, who now held the ball.
Darren moved up next to Wyatt for a second. "Still enjoying Chris Hemsworth's balls?"
Wyatt rolled his eyes. "Be quiet," he hissed before tossing the ball up into the air and smacking it over the net.
