"Well, well well," Darren jeered as he stood up from his seat at the table and walked over to meet Wyatt and Allie. "Look at what the cat coughed up. Is that my old friend, Wyatt Hudson? The guy I've known since, I don't know, the third grade?"
Wyatt rolled his eyes as Darren pulled him in for a bear hug. The bigger man picked him up off of the floor and squeezed him so hard he thought he might pop. "Yes," he gasped before being set back down. "It is I."
Darren kept his hands on Wyatt's shoulders and shook his head. "What's that you're wearing? You smell sexy."
"It's not Old Spice," Allie chimed in as she walked over to the table and took a seat across from Elizabeth, who stood up to come and greet Wyatt as well.
"Okay, hands off, pal," Elizabeth playfully ordered as she shoved Darren aside. "I swear, sometimes I think he's more into you than he is me!"
Darren shrugged. "Well, it's like I've always said, if we ever divorce I'm switching teams and snagging Wyatt."
Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "He's an idiot," she hissed as she smiled at Wyatt and went in for a hug.
"I know. But he's your idiot," Wyatt laughed as he hugged her back.
"I missed you," she said as everyone seated themselves. "Really."
Wyatt sighed as he looked at his three best friends and felt a twinge of guilt. "I'm really sorry," he confessed. "I know I've been MIA lately. I didn't mean to take it out on you guys."
"Hey," Elizabeth said as she reached across the table. "You had a bad way to go with him. It makes sense."
"Don't beat yourself up," Allie added. "I've already beaten you up enough today."
"Yeah, we were all going to go and get you but we didn't want to overwhelm you," Darren explained. "So we figured Allie was the best person to send."
"I'd say that was a solid plan," Wyatt agreed as the waitress walked up to their table to take their orders.
"He'll have the Rattlesnake," Darren cut in before Wyatt could place his order. "With an extra shot of tequila." When Wyatt gave him the eye, he shrugged his shoulders.
While they were waiting for the drinks, conversation flowed just as easily as it always did among the four of them. They had all been born in Hesperia, Georgia and were around the same age. While Wyatt and Darren had known each other since the fifth grade, they met Allie and Elizabeth when they went into middle school. Since those early days, the four of them had been constant fixtures in each other's lives. So much so that Elizabeth and Darren had gotten married just a few years after high school. Wyatt smiled softly as he watched his three friends. Allie was the aggressive one, the loudest one. Elizabeth was more reserved, having been brought up in a pretty strict household. Then there was Darren, who defied description. After graduating from high school, the four of them had gone away to college in New York and had remained there ever since.
"Have you seen the new Marvel movie yet?" Darren asked, snapping Wyatt from his reverie.
"No."
Darren shook his head. "I know it's bad when you're neglecting a Marvel movie," he pointed out.
"Especially if Chris Hemsworth is in it," Elizabeth said.
Wyatt thanked the waitress for his drink, then held it up. "To Chris Hemsworth," he playfully proclaimed before he took a sip. "Man, this is strong," he observed.
"Good thing I drove you here," Allie said.
"So, I need the details," Darren said. "You were with Brian for about a year and then broke up and went off into your little convent lifestyle and we never got the full story."
