Monday morning arrived as quickly as ever. As Wyatt woke up and began the morning dance of preparing for his day, he suddenly found the routine he was in to be unappealing to him. He had come to jokingly call his life a hamster wheel of sorts. He hadn't really worried too much about it before. When he and Brian had split up, he'd actually found a great deal of comfort in his routine of auditions, gym, home, repeat. But now? Now he found that he loathed the thought of continuing this cycle. Maybe his weekend with his friends had shaken something loose in his heart? Maybe he was recalling all of the spontaneous fun they'd had when they were a little younger? Either way, the phone call he received as he left from another audition was a welcome one.
"Hey, how do you feel about a vacation?" Darren asked when Wyatt answered.
"I mean, I'd love one. But I can't afford it right now. Not until I get a new role," Wyatt said, intrigued with where this was going.
"Good! I was just talking to Elizabeth about the four of us going somewhere together for a week or so. It's been way too long since we did something like that."
Wyatt agreed with the sentiment and reminded Darren that a vacation just wasn't in the cards for him. Curiously, he asked Darren what he had in mind.
"San Diego," Darren replied. "You know my grandparents have a beach house there. We can go and stay the week. Enjoy the beach and the sights..."
"I really shouldn't. Like I said, I need to concentrate on finding work" Wyatt pointed out. Though, to be honest, the idea of enjoying a beach sounded great. He and his friends had grown up in Hesperia, Georgia. It was a small town just outside of Savannah. The four of them had gone to Tybee Island too many times to count. It was where Darren and Wyatt had learned to surf. "Not that I don't enjoy the beach," he quickly added. "And the change of scenery could be cool."
"And there's also this little convention called Comic-Con," Darren swiftly added.
Wyatt grinned as he walked across a stoplight. Comic-Con was something he and Darren had always talked about going to but never really made solid plans for it. Both of them were self-proclaimed comic book nerds. To say this sort of excursion was major bucket list material was an understatement.
"Are you serious?" Wyatt asked.
"I'm looking at the checkout menu right now. One click and we've got four tickets. I refuse to hear you say no, man."
"How much do I owe you?" Wyatt quickly asked as he walked toward a coffee shop, lured by the aroma and the promise of caffeine.
"Nothing."
"Stop it," Wyatt said before placing his order with the barista.
"I'm serious. Your birthday is in a few months. Consider it an early birthday gift."
"Well, how can I refuse?" Wyatt chuckled as he accepted his drink.
"Who knows? Maybe you'll get within fifty feet of Chris Hemsworth?" Darren teased.
Wyatt maintained an upbeat attitude throughout the entire day. Having decided that he would indulge in a vacation, Wyatt spent his spare time making plans and daydreaming. He was in the middle of arranging the list in his head of things to pack when he got a text message from his mother. She was checking in with him, making sure he was doing well.
Making sure I haven't put my head in the oven.
He smiled at the screen and reminded himself that, despite the bumps in his road, he was really a lucky person.
Having grown up in a household that was immensely accepting of his sexuality, Wyatt was so often reminded of how lucky he was. His parents hadn't batted an eye when he'd come out in high school. They'd made no big deal of it whatsoever. His mother's older brother was gay, and both parents had many friends who were.
