Once upon a time, twenty-five years prior to the First Light, two brothers were born into the world.

Their names were Tomura and Toshinori Yagi, two brothers who seemed to be born with an unbreakable bond.  Tomura was the eldest of the two of them by exactly one year.

Unfortunately for them, they were both born Quirkless.  In fact, it wasn't just them who were Quirkless, it was also their parents, and their grandparents, and their great-grandparents.  The two brothers came from a long line of Quirkless people.

It was safe to say that the Yagi name was laughed upon.  A lot.

It was enough to reduce the Yagis' parents to serious depression.  Their father, after finding out that both of his sons were Quirkless, one day told the two babies and their mother that he was off to buy some groceries.  When Tomura, who was six at the time, pointed out that their fridge was still full of food, his father didn't answer him and left the house.

He never returned, leaving the burden of caring for the two boys to their mother.

They both knew that their mother suffered a lot.  She worked a day job and a night job, which was just enough to support herself and her two sons, so she was rarely at home.  She couldn't find a way to gain any support, as her friends had left her after finding out that her sons were Quirkless.  Even her own parents cut off contact with her completely.

However, she still tried to do the best she could with her two sons.  As poor as she was, she still managed to get her sons into a public school.

"Don't be like your mother," she told them one day, resting on their small couch with her two sons sitting by her feet.  "Be bright.  Be smart.  Be so smart and bright that nobody will want to reject you, Quirkless or not.  You don't need to have a Quirk to live a successful life. This world is big, there are many opportunities for you to grab at!  I'm sorry that I can't provide much for you, but please, promise that you'll live better lives than the one I live in."

Young Tomura and Toshinori took their mother's words very seriously.

From that day on, the two boys dedicated themselves fully to their studies.  Not only because that her mother couldn't afford toys for them to play with, but also because they wanted to fulfill their mother's request for themselves.

And all their hard work was paying off.

Tomura and Toshinori were golden minds, shining distinctly from the masses, just waiting to be spotted by someone.  At the age of eight, both Tomura and Toshinori had started middle school, with Tomura intentionally holding himself just enough so that his younger brother could land in the same grade level as him.  At the age of twelve, the two were on their way to high school.  At the age of fifteen, the two of them were enrolled into one of the best colleges in all of Japan, having gotten the highest GPAs in their school.

It was almost unheard of.  Their classmates were in disbelief.  How could two fifteen-year-olders, two Quirkless fifteen-year-olders, take over them in terms of academics?  Even those of them with powerful IQ Quirks?  Of course, they got bullied for that, but both brothers knew that it was due to their jealousy.

Ironically, the two of them became very successful Quirk scientists.  They quickly acquired worldwide fame as being some of the best Quirk scientists in the world despite being Quirkless at just the age of twenty-five.

They were living the dream.  They lived very successful lives.  They were very, very far from poor and their futures were as bright as Luminosity whenever he activated his Quirk in the dark.  Although they were very oftenly verbally, and sometimes physically, targeted by others for being Quirkless, that was only to be expected because, well, they were Quirkless.
