Five months had passed since Tomura started his Radiant transformation experiment.
The other agents had varied responses towards the experiment. Upon hearing it, Viper just walked out of the commander's office without a word. Omen and Killjoy both worded their encouragements but none offered to assist him in the experiment. That was perfectly understandable. They probably did want to help but it was common knowledge that Tomura was the bright one out of the five of them. They probably saw themselves as not smart enough to help him.
Modifying his body had turned out to be much easier than he had thought. His years as a Quirk scientist had given him an in-depth knowledge of the human body. Simply asking the commander for a body of one of the dead Radiants and comparing the molecular and DNA-related differences between a normal human body and the dead Radiant's body. It took him only a couple of months to concoct a substance that would break down his own body's DNA and replace it with some Radiant DNA, just enough to change the attributes of his body but not as much to completely change who he was.
Upon injecting the substance into his body, he instantly fell to the floor, completely knocked out.
It wasn't until a week later that he awoke in the infirmary.
The first phase of his experiment had gone flawlessly smooth, so flawlessly smooth, in fact, that he had to check multiple times to see if the process had been undergone at all. After running a few dozen scans on his own body, he confirmed that his bodily functions were proceeding as normal.
He decided to just write off the experiment as a failure and let it end there. He wasn't really sure of what to expect from it, even if the first phase had succeeded. Transforming one's self into a Radiant was completely unheard of, fantastical even. He couldn't even remember what dream he had pulled that idea out of.
Then one day, as the agents were having breakfast in their mess hall, Tomura suddenly fell over and face-planted into his tray of mashed potatoes. Both his temperature and his heart rate had suddenly shot up, which lead the agents to quickly rush him back into the infirmary.
That was when the changes started.
Upon waking up, Tomura began running medical scans on his own body again. Immediately, he noticed some changes.
His heart beat was erratic and his organs appeared to be working faster than they normally did, though his body didn't show any signs of dysfunction. A blood test revealed that there was a moderate amount of radianite in his blood. His blood to radianite ratio was almost exactly that of a Radiant's.
Unbelievably, the first phase had been a complete success. Tomura was now a Radiant.
The experiment was back in full effect.
Another two months pass before Tomura decides to go to his commander in request for his first mission in a very long time.
It was a capture mission, meaning he and another agent (or agents) had to somehow wade through some corrupt pro hero's large agency and bring him or her into custody. He did go on a couple of capture missions himself, but he never actually stepped foot out of the agency van. Instead, he would provide the other agents with intel from a safe place that would help them with their mission. Now, he could do just that and actually help out in the field as well.
The commander sent Tomura, Killjoy, and Omen onto a mission to bring in Kamui Woods, a Radiant pro hero who specialized in growing especially large, carnivorous plants as long as there was fertile ground nearby. He already had the brainpower to make time and distance calculations that were vital to a mission. Now that he was actually helping his fellow agents take down bad guys meant he was doing jobs meant for two people.
