There she was, standing in front of the door; hands on the handle and contemplating whether to open it or not. What if it makes a sound? What if they woke up? What if she couldn't accomplish what she was trying to? After thinking for long, she did it; she opened the door and that's when the lights of the room where they slept turned on. She sighed knowing that she will get caught no matter what.
"Y/n? What are you doing there honey?"
She slowly turned her head towards the direction from where the voice came.
"I was hungry okay? And I can't sleep either!"
"But you have your exam tomorrow from ten, you must sleep to wake up in time and leave for your exam. It's two in the night."
"Yeah, mom I'll sleep but first I just need something to eat. I am really hungry."
With that said she quickly looked back in the fridge, rummaging through all the snacks that they had at home. When she found her favorite snack, she quickly grabbed it and ran to her room while passing a quick small smile to her mother who was standing by her bedroom door; smiling and slightly shaking her head at her eighteen year old daughter's childishness.
-----
It was the Physics exam, the only subject she liked. Although she reached the examination center late, the reason being she slept late at night, she still managed to finish her exam on time. Upon exiting the exam hall she immediately called her mom to let her know that she will arrive home late as she just had her last exam, got done with high school shit and she needed some time to get her head out of all the nonsense that high school brought to her. She was now about to start a new life and she just needed some time alone for herself before another crucial part of her life started.
Putting her phone in her pocket, she quickly went to the school canteen to grab some coffee and then headed towards this isolated place almost at the outskirt of the city where probably no human visited. That place was 'gloomy'; that's what everyone said and that was the reason why she thought of exploring that area before she moved to another town for her higher studies. She had always been that quiet girl that never had any friends except but for her parents and is always in her little bubble and would not like it if someone just tries to get very close to her.
As she reached the place, which was 'gloomy' for everyone, she sat at the foot of one large tree which she thought was the prefect spot as she could get a nice view of the entire area. The place was filled with tall trees and a river that separated her world from 'theirs'. She just sat there listening to some slow music while the wind blew lightly through her hair. She could hear the beautiful sound that the flowing water in the river made and while she was busy enjoying her own company in complete solitude, she was very sure that she spotted someone from the corner of her eyes.
She immediately snapped her head towards the right where she 'saw' the figure but as soon as she looked right, there was no one. She had good eyesight; which she believed and pretty much everyone said that as well, therefore it was quite surprising to her that she couldn't see anyone when she was sure that she did see someone standing far away from her. It was very strange for 'normal' people to be here as this place was rumored to be the gateway to the 'parallel world'-the term that pretty much everyone used to describe the world on the other side of the river; and the place she was at was very close to the area that was prohibited for any human to step foot on as it was not a 'human world'. They believed if someone crossed the river, they would never come back and would be forever stuck in the world to which they did not belong. The mysteries of the so-called 'parallel world' were very fascinating to Y/n but as ordered by her mother, she never even thought of stepping foot on the other side of the river. Her mother has always told her that on the other side of the river, lives creatures that are way out of imagination for humans. She grew up hearing stories of how people that tried to explore the 'parallel world' never made their way back home. Therefore, Y/n never dared go against all the beliefs of people that belonged to her world.
But today was different. She was soon turning nineteen and was planning on leaving this place and moving to another city for her higher studies. 'So, why not go and explore the other side?' 'What will happen if I set foot on 'their' land?' 'Will I never come back or will I find something that will completely turn my life around?' These were the questions that were dwelling in her head and she had made a decision that she will go and find out what actually lives on the other side.
She stood on her two, packed her things, gathered up a lot of courage, and started walking towards the river. There was a small bridge made of bamboos that connected both the 'worlds' and for one to cross the river, they have to cross the bridge as there was no other way you could cross the river unless you are willing to swim, which she, of course, wouldn't do at that moment. She stood in front of the bridge, almost ready to step foot on it when she hears someone speak.
"Stop right there you little brat."
Upon hearing that deep, raspy voice she immediately turned around and saw an almost six feet tall buff guy standing just a few meters away from her. They both had intense eye contact for few seconds when he spoke up again.
"Do you not know that it's not safe for you to go to that side?"
"Who are you and what are YOU even doing here?" she asked.
He did not reply, rather he started slowly walking towards her and stopped when he was just three feet away from her and that is when she studied his features.
He was tall, had a nice physique, had sleek black hair that covered almost all of his forehead and he was wearing a mask due to which she could not guess what he actually looked like but she was pretty sure he was handsome, and his eyes; the eyes she could have sworn she had seen them before but can not actually figure out where. She examined him from top to bottom and turns out, this guy standing right in front of Y/n, had an awesome taste in fashion.
"You better leave before it gets dark or else you might end up like how I did long back."
Before Y/n could even ask any further questions to that mysterious guy, he already started walking towards where he came from.
After thinking for some good seconds Y/n decided to head back home as she couldn't figure out what that handsome guy meant by, 'she would end up like him'. So she thought it would be very safe for her if she just gets out of here before the sun goes down. Turning around just to take a last glance at the 'world' on the other side of the river, she heads back to home completely unknown to the fact that there were not just one but two pairs of eyes still watching her.
