"Mm, this is going to take a bit longer than we expected." one of the forensic researchers spoke while examining the fence.
"What do you mean?" Y/n asked with curiosity.
The forensic department had reached Y/n's grandma's house a few minutes ago and immediately after they arrived, they started with the investigation without any delay.
"He means that we couldn't find any fingerprints on the fence and we have to find some other way." the other researcher who was standing beside the former one, replied.
"But I clearly saw him jump over the fence and run away."
"Could have been wearing gloves!" the latter researcher exclaimed.
"He wasn't!" Y/n fought back as she clearly remembered that his hands were not covered with gloves; she did see his skin.
The whole time the police officer who ordered to call the forensic department, kept looking at both Y/n and the researcher simultaneously as they were having an argument. He did doubt that the researcher was completely right because he very well knew that this murder case was not even near to normal.
"Ah, Ms. Y/n! I want you to describe the features of the man that you saw in the backyard." the officer spoke while gaining everyone's attention.
"I- I actually didn't see him from the front as his back was facing me but he was quite tall and buff."
"Mhmm, and?"
"And- and he was wearing all black. He had a trench coat on and a black mask, probably."
"Okay. What we will do is, we'll go for the sketch of the man. Although you have seen him from behind, a sketch is always helpful. We never know if we suddenly come 'back to face' with him, haha!" the officer joked.
"Back to face? What's that?" Y/n questioned; clearly not understanding the joke.
"Like his back and our face, you know." the officer explained what he meant by 'back to face' and that is when it got into Y/n's head and finally she chuckled at the officer's joke.
-----
After waiting for several minutes, the artist finally arrived who was supposed to be making the sketch of the man in the backyard as per Y/n's guidance. The artist and Y/n, both sat in the living room with Y/n describing the features of the man while the artist very skilfully moved his hands to draw the exact same as Y/n was telling him. The police officers were seated with them in the living room as well whereas the forensic researchers continued with their investigation.
After about thirty minutes of Y/n very minutely describing the man, the artist could finally complete the sketch. Although it was a sketch of a man from behind, it seemed to be of help to the police officers. As the artist was done with the sketch, he handed it to the officer who called for the artist for inspection. The officer looked at the sketch for some good minutes before passing it to Y/n so that she could confirm if the man in the backyard looked the exact same from behind. Upon taking the paper from the officer's hands and examining it with ultimate concentration, she confirmed that the artist drew the exact same man that she saw.
The police officer asked the artist to leave as his work was done and so the artist did. After he left, the officer asked to take as many photocopies of the sketch as possible. They wanted to distribute in the local neighbourhood so that if this guy gets spotted by anyone at any point, they can directly give a call to the police department. The officers did not want to publicly announce that this guy was being searched for as it would have alerted him, therefore they kept it private. Although it was just his back that was drawn on the paper and there was no face visible, it would still be very easy to find him in case he lived in this town as the people of this area not very rich to afford clothes that expensive; a classy leather trench coat with leather boots is something that the people of this town would dream of having but would not be able to afford.
It was getting dark outside and the police officers had to return. The forensic researchers searched for more clues except but for the fingerprints and the only thing they could find was the boot prints on the ground. They traced it down and could come up with the exact pattern of the soles of the boots. Upon taking out the print of the design that they traced out, they gave one photocopy of it to Y/n at her request; she wanted to conduct her own research at this point. After they greeted each other and Y/n thanked the officers and the researchers for their support, they left and Y/n promised on visiting the police station the next morning for the formalities.
Going into her grandma's bedroom and sitting on the bed while gently roaming her left palm on the bedsheet, she felt her eyes well up with tears at the thought of losing her family. She was totally alone in this world now and did not have anyone. She trusted that 'grumpy guy' from her town but now doubted him as- wait! The sketch! Fuck!
Running to the living room and grabbing the piece of paper on which the artist drew the sketch, she examined the figure properly. Upon realizing the truth, she fell on her knees; it was him. It was the 'grumpy guy'. Although she could not see his face, she has spent enough time with him to quickly recognize him even from behind. It was him, she knew. The guy with almond-shaped eyes and a boxy smile that seemed very familiar to her; it was him that visited her grandmother's house. 'He killed my grandma?' 'He killed my entire family?' Y/n thought.
She completely broke down thinking that she trusted the wrong person. She did not just trust the wrong person but she actually trusted a murderer; a killer that killed her entire family. She knew that she would have to dig up a lot to find the truth but she was not going to back away; she would go to any extent to get her revenge. She cried an ocean that night while still lying on the living room floor with the sketch in her hands. She screamed and cried as she felt betrayed by the only one that she felt safe with after losing her family. She for an instance thought that she had someone to look up to in difficult situations, but it all came crashing down after she scrutinized the sketch.
She wept the whole night and then woke up in the morning with red puffy eyes. She was heartbroken. She remembered that she had to go to the police station for the formalities and so without any delay, she quickly got up and made her way to the washroom. Freshening herself up and changing into some simple outfit, she made her way out of the house without even having breakfast. She hurriedly made her way to the police station as she did not want to be late. She knew that she had to return to her town by tonight as she had to join her job at the bakery from tomorrow and if she gets late, it will only be problematic for her.
