Jin's 1st Person POV

"You finally made it," my little sister, Soonae, says coolly to me as I settle in the seat across from her in a cafe in Long Beach. She was previously scrolling through her phone to keep her occupied and she has her usual drink in front of her- a caffè macchiato.

"Sorry I was running late!" I apologize as I set my phone and cold brew coffee on the table. "I had trouble sleeping last night."

"No worries, Jin. You have every right to sleep in. It's the weekend," she says in an understanding tone.

My sister currently lives in Long Beach which is only a little over a half hour away from where I reside. She originally moved out here because of a past relationship but decided to stay long after that ended because she loved living in this area. She was one of the main reasons it made it easy for me to decide to move to Southern California.

"I've just had a lot on my mind," I simply tell her.

"Well, when you called me yesterday evening to meet up, you seemed troubled. Is everything going okay at the university?" My sister looks over at me, worriedly.

"Work has been going well. I've been adjusting with the courses I'm teaching and they have been going smoothly. It's just I haven't told you this, but I'm working with someone who I'd least expect to see again." I take a sip of my cold brew as she raises a brow at men

"Well, I'm curious! Who?!" My sister questions me.

"Y/F/N Y/L/N." I clearly say out loud.

"Holy shit! No way?!" My sister says with the most surprise in her tone.

My sister knows Y/N. They actually got along really well with each other whenever Y/N would come to hang out at our house back in the day. Soonae looked up to her and she thought I was an idiot for ending things with her. My sister grew suspicious when she didn't see Y/N around all of a sudden and wasn't hearing from her like normal. I had to confess to Soonae about what happened that awful night. She was understanding and could see where I was coming from. She was just as greatly affected by the divorce as I was so she was able to sympathize and understand why being in a relationship was the last thing I wanted to be in while our parents were going through the messy divorce process.

"Yes, she's in the Math and Economics department with me," I inform her.

"Damn, what a small fucking world!" She says with wide eyes.

"You're telling me, Soonae," I say as I shake my head at the thought.

"How has it been?! Do you see her often around campus?! Is it awkward?! How does she look?!" My sister asks incessant questions.

"Damn! Pace yourself with all the questions!" I say to my sister and chuckle and continue to answer her questions, "It's been somewhat awkward. She seems to be dodging me which is kind of difficult because our offices are close to each other, on the same floor. And, I'll be honest, she's still insanely beautiful."

"I can imagine she still resents you after all these years and I wouldn't blame her," my sister honestly tells me.

"I was hoping that with her seeing me after ten years, maybe she might've moved on by now. I know what I did back then was beyond awful but we were young and I figured she's gone through a lot of obstacles in her life since then, that by now, I could've been a distant memory." I share my thoughts to my sister.

"Honestly, Jin, I don't think it was that easy for Y/N to just move on. I considered her a friend, and, back when you two were still together- when you were at school or working, sometimes she and I would hang out. You knew that since she'd tell you how we'd hang out back then. What you didn't know is how much she loved bringing you up whenever we talked about our love lives. Obviously I didn't like hearing about you, since you're my brother, but she was head over heels for you. You were her first love, and for you to disappear like that, so abruptly, I'm sure that broke her." My sister is straight to the point.

"Soonae...I know."

"I can't imagine her seeing you now, working in the same university, and the same department, no less! But, it's not shocking since you both were such major math nerds. Anyway, have you spoken to her at all?!"

"We did talk yesterday," I say to her as I take another sip of my cold brew, and I proceed to tell her all about what Y/N and I said to each other when she was in my office.

My sister kept making shocked facial expressions as I was filling her in on how Y/N opened up to me about her feelings when I left her the way I did. I even told Soonae how I admitted to Y/N that the feelings she had for me weren't unrequited and that I felt the same way, but that I was conflicted because of everything else happening in my life, especially the divorce.

"Wait, you told her you loved her back then?" Soonae's eyes are like giant saucers.

"I didn't say those exact words. I had told her how when she told me 'I love you' to me all throughout the night, that it wasn't just her who had felt that way. So, I guess it was implied." I rub my forehead just thinking about Y/N's face when I dropped that confession to her.

"Damn, Jin. Don't you think it'll be even more awkward then?" She asks and I roll my eyes.

"Yeah, Soonae, I'm well aware that my confession will make it more uncomfortable for her seeing me around the school premises. But, I'm glad I was able to tell her my side."

"That's true. In a way, you gave her closure by telling your side of the situation because you left her with unanswered questions in her mind for all those years. Anyway, I hope things get a little less awkward and you two can civilly and comfortably work together moving forward."

"I really hope so, too," I say to my sister.

I can't handle her looking at me with such disdain every time I pass by her or see her from afar. I don't want her to look at me like I'm an enemy.

A/N:

Hi, Worldwide Cuties! 😘🌹

Hi! I know this chapter might be slow but I wanted to introduce a character who's aware of both sides of the story and know Jin and Y/N well-enough and can understand where they were both coming from.

Thank you for being amazing and checking out this chapter! It means a lot!
