Eventually, we made it to the third and final floor. I was tired, and spotting the rising sun through the open window didn't help.
"Fuck off!" I groaned, swiping away a vex with my sword. It continued to circle my head, so I quickly swung my sword at it and watched it disappear.
"And there we go," Techno said in satisfaction, putting his sword away. He picked up the totem that dropped from the final evoker and tossed it in his hand.
"Finally," I sighed in relief, holding back a yawn. Techno smiled at me amusedly, before pulling out the other five totems that we found.
"We were pretty lucky with loot at this mansion," he said, "Here's your payment." He handed me one of the totems, which I accepted with a quick nod before sliding into my bag with the rest of my ores.
We left the mansion through the window that we broke in through ("When breaking and entering, it's a bit of a habit of mine to exit in the same place I enter," Techno had said).
"So, about the other half of our deal—" I started. We had traveled a short distance away from the mansion, near the river where we had first met.
"Don't worry, I haven't forgotten." He pulled a small object out of his pocket and held it out to me.
"A compass," I said, looking at it, "So I take it that we're parting ways?" I picked the glowing compass from his hand, and turned it over in my hand. It was old, with scratches along the side and the pink glow of the needle had dimmed.
"This was Phil's backup, in case he ever couldn't find his way back to L'Manburg," Techno explained, "He has the route memorized now, so I have no reason to keep it."
"Thanks, Techno," I said, looking down at the compass. It pointed straight north, following the path of the river.
"I've got to get going now, but I would hope that you return to L'Manburg safely, (Y/n)," he told me, "Say hello to Phil for me."
"You know, Techno, after everything that happened during the war, why'd you still help me?" I asked him curiously, "Knowing that I was Schlatt's sister, as well as Tubbo's close friend. If it was anyone else lost out here, I don't think you would have helped them."
Techno pulled out an enderpearl and walked a few steps away from me. Then, he turned around and met my eyes, a blank expression on his face.
"You've got the makings of a great warrior," he commented, "And if it weren't for the circumstances, I'm sure you would have made an even better ally." He gave me a quick smile before throwing his enderpearl in the opposite direction, lifting his arm into a mock salute as his body faded behind the purple particles.
He sure knows how to make an exit. I laughed to myself and quickly crafted a boat, ready to finally return back home. As I paddled down the river, following the current, the needle continued to point forwards.
Soon enough, the river opened up into a lake, surrounded by trees. I rowed to the shore and hopped out of my boat to continue the journey on foot.
It was late evening when L'Manburg finally came into view, and I couldn't help but smile when I spotted the flag flying above the White House, visible in front of the orange sunset.
Trying to rub the tiredness from my eyes, I made a mental note to go find Tubbo the next morning. I walked over to my house in L'Manburg and pushed the door open.
I set my bag down next to the door and hummed quietly to myself as I walked across the room to light a lantern. I blew on the flame, waiting for it to grow brighter, before turning back around.
And finding a person lying asleep in one of the chairs.
"What the—fuck! Tubbo!" I exclaimed loudly, jumping backwards. He jolted awake and yelled in surprise, falling out of the chair.
"(Y/n), oh my god! Where have you been?!" He said frantically, stumbling to his feet, "You disappeared the day after visiting Tommy, and—for fuck's sake—I was so worried!"
"I'm sorry, I went mining but ended up getting lost," I explained to him, "Then I somehow met Techno, and he promised to help me get home if I helped him loot a woodland mansion, and then finally I'm back here. Have you slept at all?"
Tubbo shook his head, giving me a guilty smile. He had bags under his eyes and his pajamas were slightly wrinkled. Please don't tell me he's been in here since he realized I was missing—
"I'm fine, Tubbo, and you need to get back to being the president of this country," I said, "Come on, let's get you back to the White House."
He nodded, so I grabbed the lantern off the wall and walked with him back over to the White House. I stopped when we reached the front door, and watched as Tubbo unlocked the door and stepped through.
"I want to see you looking sharp in your president's suit tomorrow," I told him. Tubbo stifled a laugh and nodded, whispering good night before pulling the door shut.
I sighed, shaking my head with a smile, and returned back home. I hung the lantern back on the wall and threw myself onto the bed, thoroughly exhausted, and I was out like a light within minutes.
