"I thought you would say that, but I decided to give it a shot anyway," Techno said.
"I—I don't know, maybe it is time for L'Manberg's story to come to a close," I continued, clasping my hands behind my back, "too much has happened. I can't just keep turning a blind eye."
"The same with me." Phil smiled sadly.
"But I can't join you for two reasons. One, because of Tubbo. Two, because of Dream." I dropped my arms to my sides and adjusted the cloak over my shoulders. "I can't take part in the destruction of this country, but I can concede to standing aside."
"Well at least this meeting hasn't gone to waste," Techno mused.
Thanks for destroying my conscience, you two."
The pink-haired male snorted at my comment. "I'm just glad that I've knocked some sense into you. I'll see you in three days, then—don't come visit. That's suspicious and I'd rather you not foil our precious plans."
"Why would I even want to visit you?" I huffed with a hint of sarcasm.
Techno grinned. "See you around, (Y/n)."
"Be safe," Phil told me softly.
I waved goodbye to them and watched in silence as they each they enderpearls in quick succession and disappeared behind the curtain of twinkling purple particles. As soon as I was alone again, I released a breath that I didn't know I was holding. My back slumped against the tree behind me and I simply stared into the darkness for a few minutes. There were too many thoughts running through my head, like a flooding river toppling over its banks.
"What in the world are you doing," I muttered to myself with a shake of my head. Talking with Techno and Phil had shone light on something I had chosen to ignore for so long.
I was stuck now. My head told me to defend L'Manberg at all costs, but my heart told me it needed to go.
After a short while, I began walking back towards my house. I crossed the open field and made my way to the main path, crossing over a bridge into the town. I was trying to be quiet, but I felt like my beating heart was loud enough for the entire world to hear. I walked up the steps to my front door and pulled out my keys.
"(Y/n)?" Someone tapped on my shoulder.
I yelled out in surprise, flipping around and throwing a punch in the direction of the voice. The person screamed just as my hand made contact with something—probably their face—and they tumbled down the front steps and landed on the wooden panels tof the boardwalk.
"Tommy?!" I whisper-shouted, squinting in the darkness and recognizing the blonde mess of hair. The boy groaned in response and rubbed his hand over the left side of his face. I quickly jumped down the steps and kneeled at his side, checking to make sure I didn't hurt him too badly.
"Fucking hell, (Y/n)," Tommy muttered with a slight lisp, "was that really necessary? I knew I would scare you a bit but didn't realize you'd throw your goddamn fist at me! What the fuck!"
"Sorry," I replied sheepishly, "you good?"
He wiped the back of his hand over his mouth and a streak of blood appeared. "Blegh. My cheek is bleeding."
"You'll be okay," I told him, "just a bruise and a cut. We can put some ice on it and you'll be better in no time." I ruffled up his hair and the boy scowled. He pulled himself into a seated position next to me.
"Fuck you," Tommy huffed.
"Oh, shush," I responded, knocking into him with my shoulder, "what did you expect when you tapped me on the shoulder in the middle of the fucking night and whispered my name? I'm not Secretary of Security for nothing, you know. You scared me shitless for a split second."
"I was just going to ask what you were doing up so late," the boy retorted sullenly.
"I could ask the same of you." I shifted my legs so that I could cross them in front of me. It must have been an interesting sight—the two of us were sitting on the ground in the middle of town in the darkest hours of the night.
Tommy seemed to shrink back. "I was doing...stuff. You know, for the country and shit. We'll have a war on our hands in three days. And I'm, like, the Vice President and stuff..."
"I don't care what the hell you were up to," I sighed with a shake of my head. I stood up and offered a hand to Tommy. "You hungry? I've got food inside."
A wide grin appeared on his face. "I want food!"
Tommy grabbed my hand and I helped him to his feet. Then, we went inside my house. He sat at my kitchen table and babbled on and on about life at Techno's and how he didn't miss the bastard.
I listened while making two sandwiches for us, but my mind was drifting. Did Tommy see me with Techno and Phil? If so, why didn't he ask me out front about it? And if he didn't, why did he seem to be hiding something as well?
"—oh, and (Y/n), what were you doing so late anyway?" The blonde asked curiously.
"Couldn't sleep, so I took a walk around L'Manberg. It's been stressful trying to deal with these war preparations, especially the fact that they are threatening to destroy the place. Who knows what the hell they have planned." I picked up the two plates and set one in front of Tommy and the other in front of myself.
"Ah. I understand," he nodded. He shoved the sandwich into his mouth. I had to hold back a laugh at the sight of it. I took a bite from my own and used those moments of silence to straighten my spiraling thoughts.
Everything that I was doing or saying was to protect myself and the people around me. I convinced myself that my lie to Tommy was for the better. I wasn't doing much harm by choosing to stand neutral in the war.
I started opening my mouth to explain my decision to Tommy, but stopped before any words left my mouth. I would wait until the next day. And tell all of them at once. Even if they hated me, it was my decision to be neutral.
"Fuck Techno's golden apples. I'm sick of them. This sandwich is far superior," the blonde proclaimed. I laughed to myself and continued eating.
