I hummed to myself as I walked down the path towards the White House, my hands shoved deep in the pocket of my hoodie. It was early enough in the morning that there were still dew droplets shining on the blades of grass, but late enough that I had to go meet with Tubbo to finally visit Tommy.
When I reached the White House, I knocked loudly on the front door. Strangely, Tubbo didn't answer. I knocked again, but I still heard no footsteps or any sign that Tubbo was inside.
"Hello? Tubbo?" I called out in confusion. I twisted the doorknob and found it locked, so I walked around the perimeter of the house and glanced through the windows to find no one inside.
Where did he go?! Please don't tell me the idiot chickened out. I frowned, deciding that Tubbo probably wasn't home, and began walking away from the White House.
"If I was Tubbo, where would I go..." I muttered under my breath, scanning the area around me, "Where would I go if I was about to visit my best friend whom I haven't seen in weeks because I exiled them from my country due to a shitty mistake on their part in order to prevent war?"
Maybe a bit too specific, there, (Y/n).
"Tommy's house!" I exclaimed all of a sudden, snapping my fingers. I started jogging out of L'Manberg to head over to Tommy's old house. The same building that was the first thing Schlatt and I had seen when we arrived in L'Manburg.
Huh. Funny how quickly time passes.
I shook the thought away and quickly climbed the steps of the Prime Path, taking two at a time, as I exited L'Manburg and entered Dream Smp territory. When I reached the top, I slowed down upon seeing the familiar hobbit-hole like home.
As I approached, a flash of movement to my left caught my eye, and I spotted a person with fluffy, brown hair sitting on a bench next to a tree. I walked closer, coming around the side of the bench to sit next to him. He looked over at me in surprise but said nothing for a few moments.
"It's a nice view, isn't it?" He commented, a hint of sadness in his otherwise steady voice. I looked out past the fence in front of me and studied it; the hill dropped down into a small lake with a multitude of buildings scattered around. It occurred to me how much bigger this place really was outside of L'Manberg. I barely knew any of the buildings I was seeing.
"Yeah." I looked over at him but his eyes were focused forwards at the horizon.
"I'm surprised you found me this quickly. I hope I didn't scare you too much when you were at the White House?"
"No, no, I realized that you must have been somewhere else," I told him, "I doubted that you'd ignore my knocking that long." A smile appeared on his face for a second before it disappeared again.
"Have you ever been here before?" He asked me, "On the bench?"
"No."
"It was mine and Tommy's place," Tubbo explained in a quiet voice, "He would play his disc in the jukebox and we would sit here. Talking about life. Doing nothing. It didn't matter, because we were there with each other. The bench—this bench has been here since the start of it all."
I nodded silently, pulling his right hand from where it tightly gripped the wooden bench and holding it in mine. He looked down at it before locking eyes with me again. "Don't worry, Tubbo. Tommy will be back in L'Manburg eventually, but the first step is to make amends with him."
"I know, I know. You're right," he sighed, leaning his head back and closing his eyes, "But there's one thing I don't understand. Last time, when you visited Tommy, you said that Dream told you that you couldn't go visit Tommy without telling him. So does Dream know we're going?"
"Course not," I replied with a mischievous grin, "You really think I care about what that man says? I know the way, and so you and I are going to visit Tommy."
"I shouldn't be surprised," he said with a small laugh, looking over at me, "Should we go now?"
"If you're ready," I told him.
"I can't be any more ready than I already am. Let's go." He stood up from the bench and I stood up as well, then the two of us walked over to the main nether portal. When we arrived, Tubbo took a step forward to enter the portal but paused when he noticed me staring at it. Memories of the last time I entered the nether were filling my mind as I nervously fidgeted with the sleeve of my hoodie.
"I'm here with you, (Y/n)," he said gently, "I won't let anything bad happen to you in there." I nodded slowly, swallowing the lump in my throat and accepting his outstretched hand. He squeezed it lightly, his brown eyes meeting mine and an encouraging smile on his face.
"I'm ready," I decided. He nodded, and the two of us stepped into the portal. I released a deep breath and the purple swirls enveloped my vision and the whistles of the portal drowned out the sounds of the overworld. Then everything turned dark, and I could see or feel nothing other than Tubbo's hand around mine. The world turned to purple swirls again and the whistling noises of the nether portal returned.
I felt Tubbo's hand tug on mine and I stepped forward, out of the portal and into the nether. I was quickly met with a steamy warmth and the eerie red glow of the world. The portal area hadn't changed since I had last been there—with a mess of wooden towers and netherrack surrounding the portal.
"So, which way?" Tubbo asked me. I hummed for a moment, studying the area, before finally pointing towards a short, netherrack bridge that crossed over the lava lake below. Tubbo nodded and began walking towards it, gently pulling me along. We crossed slowly while his hand stayed tightly gripped around mine, and I felt a shiver run down my spine as I glanced down at the glowing red and orange liquid below.
We turned left once we got off the bridge and entered a tunnel, long enough that I couldn't see the exit ahead of us. The tunnel was barely wide enough that we could walk side by side, and the two of us travelled in silence for most of the journey. Eventually, the tunnel opened up again to the main nether area and we walked along a wooden path, passing groups of pigmen and occasionally coming upon ghasts.
"Look, there it is," I said, pointing ahead. Tubbo inhaled sharply when he spotted the nether portal ahead, the only purple glow among the dark red color of the nether. We walked quicker, until the two of us stood right in front of the portal, looking into the purple swirls. Tubbo released a deep breath beside me, rubbing the palms of his hands against the sides of his shirt.
"Are you ready?"
He hesitated for a moment, glancing at me, before turning back to the portal. I watched as his hands reached up to straighten his tie, and then he cleared his throat and looked back at me with his mouth pulled into a thin line. "I'm ready."
I nodded and took his hand in mine, stepping forward into the portal.
