I wake up to my phone ringing. I grabbed my phone off the nightstand and answered without checking my caller ID. "Hello?" I say sleepily.
"Ruzek, we have a body. Meet me at Lincoln Park in thirty minutes. I just texted the others," my heart sprang out of my chest at the sound of Sergeant Voight's voice. He sounded very irritated and annoyed. I immediately knew not to backchat so I nodded before I realized he can't see me.
"Sergeant, I'll be there in twenty minutes," I say while throwing my covers off me and getting up.
"I'll see you then," he said and without another word he hung up the phone.
Glancing at the time it was 4:00 am. The others left a few hours ago. After Sammy left at 9, we watched The Invisible Man movie. Me, Kim and Hailey held onto each other like our lives depended on it. Jay asked multiple times that I should go sit with him so that he could "keep me safe" and I just glared at him. Multiple times, us girls would jump in terror and the boys would chuckle.
I head to my closet and grabbed the first skinny jeans I could find and blouse too. When I looked at myself through the mirror I saw that I was wearing a nice blue skinny jeans along with a black button down blouse. I grabbed my hairbrush and tied my hair into a half up and half down ponytail, before I added a little bit of makeup to cover the bags under my eyes. I grabbed my boots next to my dresser and my leather jacket and head out the room. Grabbing my bag along with my keys, I was about to leave when I realized I don't have my phone, gun or badge. Groaning loudly I head to my room, grabbed those few things and then walked out my apartment and locked it.
When I reached Lincoln Park, blue lights were blazing everywhere and patrol officers stood around either talking or scribbling notes. I sigh and climb out of my car as a headache hit me like a wave. Don't know why though. Placing a hand on my forehead, I spotted Voight and the others in a group talking. Checking the time I saw I was 10 minutes earlier than what we agreed on. So I'm not late.
"There you are, now that everyone is here let's go see the scene," Voight says as he leads us to a spot in the trees where a body laid. It was a girl, probably around my age and the rest of her body was covered from the shoulders down.
"Unidentified D.O.A," Voight grunts out, "Clear signs of sexual assault, dumped in just her underwear, looks about somewhere in her twenties."
Everyone stood silent for a few minutes. It's cases like these that are always hard, emotionally and mentally. What kind of sick man would do something like this with a lady like her?
"Cause of death?" Hailey silently asks.
"Shot in the chest. there are signs of strangulation and defensive wounds, but my guess is the girl probably fought very hard and this son of a bitch got impatient and shot her," Voight explains as he shook his head.
"Not to be rude or anything, but why didn't homicide take the case?" Antonio asks.
"Because they let the guy kill five times now," Voight answers with clear anger in his voice, "Look, I want this son of a bitch off the streets as quick as possible. No one sleeps until then, you hear me? I want everyone in the bullpen in three hours, so rest up because you won't be sleeping again anytime soon. Time we show homicide how it's really done."
