Adam's POV
"She's stable for now," the doctor says.
I can feel my legs giving in under me, so I lean onto the wall for support. She's okay! Annabelle is Alive and she's Okay!
"She still has a long way to go," the doctor continues. "I'm gonna be real honest when I say this, she should actually be dead right now. With all the blood she's lost, it's a miracle she's alive and breathing. We had to resuscitate her atleast twice. The damage that was caused with the bullet in her shoulder aren't too bad, so she can still go back to work after she's recovered fully."
"Can we go see her?" I ask.
"She's still unconscious, her body's been through a lot during the shooting and in the OR," the doctor says slowly. "But I'll let you come one by one."
We all stood there looking at each other. We all know that everyone wants to go see her first, but we can't.
"Ruzek, she's your sister, how about you go first," Voight says, breaking the silence. "The rest of us, Antonio and a few patrol officers already started building up a case, how about we start helping out with what you can remember from the scene, let's get this man off the streets."
I nod along with everyone else and walk over to the doctor. He leads me down a few hallways and into the ICU ward. He stopped at a door and turned to me.
"Don't try to wake her up, her body needs the rest to recover," he says quietly and I nod. He opens the door for me, and I step inside.
It's quite a small room and inside stood a bed with a sleeping Annabelle in. Her face was as pale as ever with a few stitches on her forehead. She must've hit her head when she fell to the ground. Her left arm was in a sling and peeking out of her patient gown was a big patch where I assume one of her wounds is. The sight made my heart break.
I grabbed one of the chairs and sat next to her bed, before grabbing her hand. Placing a soft kiss on her forehead and then her hand, all the memories suddenly came rushing in.
Memories of us playing tag as kids. The late study nights. You're probably surprised to think that I actually studied as a kid. But jokes on you, I never studied, it was more for Annabelle, as she would drag me to her room and make me ask her things about everything she had to study.
The dance competitions she went to. Where every time that she won, I would be so proud to be her older brother. I always loved it when she played her guitar, violin or piano in the house. It made it feel a lot like home.
Every time when we were at school and boys were being mean she would come running to me. I would then walk over to the boys and watch them squirm, and then be so proud at myself for protecting my sister. She always made me feel like the biggest hero ever.
But with good memories, comes bad ones too. I remember when I was 14, one day my sister never came back from school. The terror in parents eyes as they called one of my father's partners from the police and everyone went on a search hunt to look for her. After three weeks of searching, we were about to lose hope, when they found her in a shed. I'd rather leave the story of what happened to her, to her so she could tell you.
I told her many things. I told her that she was annoying, how awesome she is, how proud I am of her, that she can always count on me, but there is one thing I regret not telling her. I never told her that I Loved her, and when I heard about what happened earlier, all I thought was, I never told her that I loved her. And that feeling of regret almost ate me whole.
After about 20 minutes of just sitting at her side and holding her hand, I got up and placed another kiss on her forehead before I walked back to the team. When I reached the waiting room, Kim was holding my mom in her arms.
