You knew time had come when the sound of distant explosions filled the air.
Keeping your eyes down at the computer's screen, you started to heard the unmistakable rustling of soldiers gathering in units and rushing down the corridors, spreading around the compound. The number of voices grew steadily louder after a while, a strange feeling of unsettlment running in the air.
Your lips rose on the corners and you had to conceal an evil grin from the guards who were standing on your sides.
Strucker turned his back at your workstation and pressed a his fingertips onto his right ear "Report to your stations immediately." You enjoyed the tense in his voice. A soldier replayed to him over the radio, and you could perceive the panic in his voice "Baron, this is not a drill! We are under attack!" Soldiers could now be heard shouting indistinctly along the corridors and out in the meadow.
A very young soldier, probably not in his twenties yet, bursted the Lab door open and came to the Baron side in a run, panting heavily and bending to grab his own knees. "They landed in the far woods. The perimeter guard panicked. Can we hold them?"
Struckers jaws tightened as he clutched hard his teeth. "Deploy the rest of the tanks. Concentrate fire on the weak ones. You, you and you: with me!" He barked at the agents still present in the Lab. "You stay here with her." He sgrunted the last order at the very young guy and sprint forward, ahead to the door. The guy didn't move sideways quick enough, so Strucker bumped directly onto him; the boy flushed and stammered an apologies, looking down at his feet. Strucker cursed and stormed outside the Lab with the other three soldiers he had called, grumpily complaining about how he was surrounded by incompetents.
You jumped on your feet the moment they left and the door closed behind their back with a loud thud.
"Y/N" the young guy called out, his hand reaching out across the desk to grip your wrist. You yelped and tugged for your wrist out of his grip, but he cut you short "Wait, I'm here for you. I am a Shield undercover agent!" He hissed, not wanting to be eavesdropped. You looked up at him in disbelief. "I am [agent name], the Avengers are coming to rescue. Let me free you, now."
He pulled out a set of keys from his pocket with a wide, genuine and sweet smile and you felt all the nerves of your body relaxing a bit. "Do they teach pickpocketing at the SHIELD academy?" You smirked at him, making him flush even redder as you titled your head back and let him reach out your neck. "A bit..." he admitted sheepishly, his trembling fingers pushing the first key into the keyhole of the collar, while you silently stared at the ceiling and prayed all the Gods that came to your mind that one of them would have worked. When just two keys were remaining, the collar clicked open and the guy let it fallen on your feet, with you great surprise and relief.
You felt your magic resuming into your body with a highly pleasant wave, a shiver of pure electricity running down your spine.
The Avengers were coming. Everything would have turned up fine very soon.
In that very same moment, the door yanked open and the Baron rushed in with two armed guards.
"NOOOOO!"
Your blood-curling scream filled the air as the poor guy who had just set you free dropped dead on the floor before your feet with a nasty thud, his glazed eyes still open and a rivulet of blood dripping out of the corner of his mouth.
Taking chance of your moment of shock, Strucker was quick enough to get over you and grab you from your neck, shoving you right into the nearest wall, your head hitting painfully the hard surface, his fingers clutching against your throat and making you fight for air.
"You will never win" you chocked out, glowering in a very menacing way. He sneered. "Oh, really? And what are you trying to do? Await for that bunch of freaks to rescue you? Or maybe call that creepy boyfriend of yours?"
"Oh no..."
You saw his shocked expression and his eyes popping out of his head as he started to feel something pouring up inside him. Confused, he softened the grip around your neck, and your feet reached the floor again. He had finally made the wrong step: he had touched your bare skin. And you were now collar free.
You grinned evilly, a flash of amusement crossing your now bright, purpled eyes.
"... I'm gonna burn this place to the ground."
You saw his face fall in a mask of agony and pain as the clear light surged from his inner core and peaked from his mouth, nose, eyeballs, lighting him up from inside out like a torch. The skin on his face cracked as the flesh turned into a fragile layer of ashes, debris from it floating away from his body in the shift of air that surrounded you both.
As the man was reduced in detritus and his clutched fist blown in the air from your neck, the two soldiers had backed into the wall before you, and they were shakily staring open-mouthed at you, their hands gripped around they rifles so tight that their fingers were almost white. They looked like they were right in front of a ghost. Or a demon.
You turned to them and titled your head sideways, cracking pleasantly your neckbones, enjoying their pathetic attempt to rush for the door. It was a quick call to unleash a small part of your light shield over them, which burned them both leaving just two nasty dark shadows printed on the wall.
A thirst for revenge you had never experienced before emerged in you and grew rapidly into a threatening wave. These men had chased you down for months; kidnapped from your family; detached from your beloved, your primary source of strength and joy; reduced you on shackles and imprisoned; beaten you up, and stripped off your powers, of your most intimate self. It was a never ending story: the HYDRA had been a pain in the neck since Steve's age. Plus, their motto along the line that cutting an head of the HYDRA would had just meant another two to grew flashed in your mind and fuelled your bad emotions. Why no one was able to root them off? Why not you?
The fact that ten or twenty men were now rushing in your direction from the end corridor, rifles and guns targeted at your chest, just made your anger grow worst.
"Wha-.... What the hell are you?!" The first two men frozen cold stone on the Lab doorstep, their faces falling into the most scared expressions you had ever seen, while their fellows bumped on their backs wondering why the stopped so abruptly and remaining well unaware of the scary creature they were about to face.
You let your magic grew further, all the muscles of your body contracted tightly and your hands balled in fists as the air around shimmered of a blinding white light that enlightened the entire room. Sucking in you abs, you let out the most angrily, growling scream. The Hulk would have been proud of that growl.
You powers reached the critical mass the moment you lifted some feet from the ground, an invisible morse gripping your whole body into the air.
And then the worst sensation you had never experienced took your breath away and made you see everything black. It felt like something had snapped in you, something that ripped reality apart.
