Ch 18: Losers and the Special Mushrooms!

"Here we go! Fried rice with roasted duck!" Lan exclaims excitedly as she removes large pan from the stove and sets it on the kitchen table.

Everyone's attention turns to the dish. The golden yellow rice mixed with various vegetables had juicy slices of duck breast resting on top of it, releasing its tasty flavour onto the rice below.

"Woah...this smells incredible!" Gabriel says in awe.

"Hehehe~" Lan chuckles, seeming pleased by the reaction.

"Now dig in before it gets cold." She says before joining the skyborn at the table.

It was super late when we knocked on their door last night but Barny and Lan were more than happy to take us in and now they even make us this amazing breakfast. Guess Gabriel picked the right place to work part-time at.

Ivan eats some of the rice. His eyes suddenly widen.

"Whoa! This is amazing!" He shouts before gulping down.

"Thank you, thank you." Lan nods in satisfaction. "Alchemy isn't just useful for potions you know." She continues with a smile.

This girl is super cute and a master cook...I'm starting to get jealous of Gabriel.

"It's really tasty, Lan." Lynn comments before taking a chug of water.

Even the grumpy Lynn can't help but compliment it!!

"Also, thanks again for letting us stay at your place. We'll make sure to repay you." Says Lynn.

"Ah, nonsense! I owe my shop and my life to you." Barny, who sat at the table speaks up.

"This is the least we can do. Please, stay here for as long as you want to."

"We'll take you up on that offer." Ivan joins in. "Until we can go back to the inn that is."

Barny nods.

"Oh and sorry for asking like this but, wasn't this place, like, completely destroyed a couple of weeks ago?" Asks Ivan. "It looks completely different now, even better than before actually."

"Yup. Good observation, Ivan." Barny nods in agreement.

..Am I being mocked?

"You see, those watermelons from Planty made a nice profit but the real money lied in the waste that Planty left behind." Says Barny.

"I played around with her remains and found that they show properties similar to the potion I originally used to create her. After some experimenting, I used that material to create a fertilizer! It enhanced plant growth and didn't turn anything into a monster!" Explains Barny.

Everyone stares at Barny, seeming somewhat weirded out.

"Played with her remains" he says...

Barny clears his throat, sensing the awkwardness. "Anyhow...I sold all of that fertilizer to the farmers in town. Using just small amounts of it was enough to bring them a years worth of crops within a weeks! It was a huge success."

"We tried to keep the price as low as possible so we can both make enough money to rebuild our home and help out the town in these difficult times." Lan smiles.

"That's very considerate." Lynn nods. "I imagine you could've sold it for higher price to some wealthy landlord but you chose to help the town."

"Of course. But this is our town as well and we have to help out." Barny joins in.

"...Which reminds me. There's another way we can help the town which I nearly forgot about." Says Barny while stroking his beard.

Everyone at the table turns to him yet again, curiously waiting for him to continue.
