Truth and Consequence

The morning after the most intimate and gratifying night I'd had with Derek began with a peaceful breakfast. I'd ordered the classic Italian breakfast for myself and Derek and was eating on the terrace of our hotel room. I stared at the curves and swirls on this balcony. It was black but the marble shined and I could see how smooth it was. There was a petite elderly man who came out to water his plants that were hanging on that terrace or balcony and the smell of fresh bread coming from the bakery up the street was always my favourite part of mornings here. I saw Derek and he had his coffee and I told him I'd ordered breakfast.

"It'll be hard to return to reality once this honey moon ends and this little one comes."

"Yup but are you remembering to take the vitamins?."

"You know me I haven't forgotten and I've been eating only the healthy options."

"I still consider beacon a food group so I trust you there."

"Haha Derek."

"I forgot to call my grandma she's been asking for updates on our trip and I haven't messaged her or called once."

"Casey about Felicia..."

"What about my grandma...?."

"You know how Jesse was at the Picasso museum and we've been running into him."

"Yeah but Derek I didn't know he'd be here."

"I think Felicia sent him to mess with our honeymoon...I had a conversation with her pretty much admitting to it....maybe her asking for updates is how Jesse kept popping up I mean he's clearly still into you and..."

"DEREK WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!."

"CASEY WOULD YOU LISTEN FELICIA IS USING YOU TO HURT US."

"WE DO NOT HAVE BEARLY ANY SUPPORT FOR US AND YOU WANT TO UNDERMINE THE ONE POTENTIAL CONNECTION I STILL HAVE TO MY FAMILY."

"FELICIA DOESN'T CARE CASEY PLEASE..."

Casey took off and I wanted to chase her but I suddenly looked around and saw the eyes that were on me. I went to get my wallet and phone went out of our room and the hotel.I then went in her direction and hoped I'd find her because this was reckless to just take off in the heat of the moment and endanger herself.

Casey had realized she did something stupid when she didn't recognize the streets she was on but saw the fountain they passed everyday that they got back to the hotel. She wanted the reassurance that Derek had been wrong to accuse her grandma of doing something so underhanded and twisted.

"Grandma..."

"Casey honey I've been waiting for an update! Why do you sound like you've been crying?."

"Grandma...."

Casey just starts to sob and tells her grandma she had a horrible fight with Derek and that she was at this fountain.

"Oh which fountain...?."

"I don't know it's one I and Derek pass everyday we leave to go exploring. So I think I'm a few blocks away from the hotel...I hope so."

"Oh I'll text Jesse and he'll come get you and-."

"Grandma...how do you know Jesse is here?."

"Oh you must've mentioned it before..."

"I haven't so why do you know and how do you know..."

"I...well Jesse mentioned how he wanted to see you."

"GRANDMA...did you send Jesse here? Have you been telling him where I was and messing with my honeymoon?!."

"I've been trying to make you see that your relationship isn't as strong as you think."

"GRANDMA WHY!."

"WHY! CASEY REALLY! YOU'RE NOT A CHILD BUT YOU SURE ACT LIKE IT."

"HOW AM I ACTING LIKE A CHILD WHEN I'M ABOUT TO HAVE ONE."

"BY THINKING THIS RELATIONSHIP WILL LAST WHEN REALLY ANY SUPPORT YOU HAVE ARE PEOPLE COMING TO SEE THE CIRCUS."

"HOW ARE WE A CIRCUS!."

"CASEY YOU TWO ARE A PORN CATEGORY AND A TWISTED CAUTIONARY TALE."

"GRADMA DO YOU LOVE ME AT ALL BECAUSE IF YOU DID THEN YOU WOULDN'T HAVE TRIED THIS."

"I DID ALL THIS BECAUSE I LOVE YOU! SAVE YOURSELF DECADES OF LONLEY CHRISTMASES AND BIRTHDAY PARTIES...JUST COME HOME."

"DEREK IS MY HOME! HE IS MY EVERYTHING AND I DO NOT NEED YOU REMINDING ME WHAT I ALREADY KNEW."

"Casey...no one will accept you I've been talking to Nora and Lizzy. They were hoping I could help but clearly you're beyond help."

"Goodbye Felicia."

"Goodbye...my sweet Granddaughter."

Casey heard the click and the phone call was over. And she just sat at the fountain unable to move or even call the hotel to send a taxi to come get her. She didn't even bring her wallet so how would she pay the fair...tears were streaming hot down her face and the pain was so fresh. She couldn't swallow the sobs and the anguish of realizing that she didn't have a chance at her grandmas support but that her mom and sister were in on this to end her marriage. Her grandma never once called it a marriage but a relationship. People passed her by and some stopped concerned for her because she was a pregnant woman crying while sitting on the side of a fountain.

Suddenly her phone rang and Derek was frantic he was looking for her so she gave him a name of a street and the fountain a description. He typed it in and said he was on the way with a cab and to stay put. Once he arrived he helped Casey in and didn't bother to pry about her tears he assumed it was his fault. But Casey just dug her face into his torso wanting to never leave these arms. Eventually she stopped crying and they were back at the hotel where they started in more ways then one. Casey felt humiliated because she was selfish and forgot for a moment that Derek lost Edwin and George and little Marti to their selfish love. But he just held her and as they left he paid the cab and once back at their room they had a calmer talk.

"I ordered some coffee for us.."

"Thank you Derek and I'm so sorry for taking off it was immature and dangerous and childish and-."

"CASEY! It's ok I was terrified but I am just so relieved you are okay and I'm sorry you are right I don't want to get in the way of you and Felicia."

"You don't have to worry she confessed to me..well she belittled me and told me my mom and Lizzie were in on this ploy to break us up and that my grandma sent Jesse here..."

"Oh my god Casey! I'm so sorry come here."

Derek just held her but her eyes hurt so much from crying that she couldn't muster up anymore tears. But Casey felt warm and apart from the broken heart and lump in her throat she also felt safe and happy. Derek and their child was the only certainty she knew now because everything else was up in the air.

"Derek since you were open with me I want to tell you something."

"Uh oh."

"I don't want you to be mad but I met with Edwin months before we were married but he's mad at us and refused my invitation...I didn't tell you because I wanted to protect you and well myself from this conversation."

"I met with Lizard and she ripped me a new one. She is furious and it was also before the wedding...seems coordinated now that we both are talking about this."

"So you aren't mad?."

"Are you?."

"Just sad Derek."

"Me too but I'm here."

Derek soothed Casey by just stroking the top of her head gently and Casey went to sleep. Derek put her in the bed and changed her into her pyjamas and figured today they'd stay in. Suddenly rain hit and Derek watched it hit the street below and just let the tears fall with the drops of rain.
