Chapter 1: Hell is Other People, Part I (Daily Life)
----
One by one, we gathered into the mess hall - yes, even the ones that appeared to scorn socialising such as Mayu and Iori. It was fairly large - a single rectangular table was enough for all sixteen of us to gather around. It seemed that Kira and Shuya were setting themselves up as the group leaders; good for me, because I didn't really care much for having to order these people around.
Kira: Right then! As you may know, this is an extremely tense situation we have found ourselves in.
Sasuke: Yeah; this is the ultimate prisoner's dilemma.
Mamoru: Why's that?
Sasuke: You remember the prisoner's dilemma? There, you have to trust a single guy to not stab you in the back, even though the best solution for you would be to stab that sucker in the back because he blindly chose to trust you. Now imagine having to trust 15 people with your life.
Reiji: ...
Sasuke: See? Exactly. How long will it be before somebody cracks under the pressure?
Slamming his hands upon the table, Tetsuo interjected.
Tetsuo: Nonsense!
Chie: Ahhh! What do you mean, ribbit?
Tetsuo: We are to think of ourselves as brothers and sisters. We have one long-term goal, and that is-
Iori: Escape?
Tetsuo: Sí.
Kira: Okay, so you may be thinking, what do we do right here, right now?
Usagi: We have an entire floor to ourselves. Why not go around and see what's there?
Ukyo: That's not a bad idea, actually. To be cautious, I propose we go around in groups of three or four-
Shouko: And if we all go in threes, there'll still be one left a sitting duck!
Ukyo: I apologise, then. We will go around in fours.
Sasuke: Why's that?
Nanae: You see, being in small groups allows us to cover more ground easily. And, you know, safety in numbers, ehehe!
Mayu: Umm... uhh...
Shuya: Anything troubling you? Would you like to go with me?
Mayu: No. I... I just can't stand this.
She reached into her pocket and took out the key that she had received. And seconds later, she had bolted out of the mess hall. Naturally, we all had to follow.
----
Our path abruptly ended in a red hallway, with no less that 16 doors embedded into the walls. On each door was a picture, and every had a likeness of our faces. It was then that I knew; whoever was doing this had targeted us specifically. But now was not the time to dwell on such matters. Mayu had ran off, and she would have most likely locked herself in one of those rooms. And what was she doing in there?
Nanae: He-hello? Mayu?
Shouko: (banging on the door) Hey! You okay in there?
Shuya: Ju-just leave her alone. It's for her own good.
Nanae: Okay, then...
It was then that the half-white, half-black bear waddled into view. Maybe to mock us, perhaps? Yes - through advice.
Monokuma: And it wouldn't have worked anyways!
Tetsuo: Fancy seeing you here.
Monokuma: Let me tell you something: these dorm rooms are fully soundproofed! Nobody outside can hear what's inside, and vice versa!
