I was up early in the morning, tugging on my jeans as the chilly weather rolled through the air. It was about 6:30. As I pulled on my sweater, I heard my phone go off. I scrambled to get to it. It was Jade.

J: I think something happened to Javier...

I wrinkled my brow. Although, it would be interesting timing since we're off for the week.

M: What the hell does that even mean?

J: He won't answer my text messages or my phone calls.

I sighed to myself.

M: Let's just talk about this when we're together.

I sent the message and returned to pulling my shoes on. Afterwards, I went running downstairs, grabbing my purse and my phone. As I was reaching for the door handle, I heard someone clear their throat. I jumped, turning around to see Devon sitting there. "What the hell are you doing?" He asked. "I'm going out for some fresh air. Not that that's any of your business." I snapped, folding my arms over my chest. "Not going to see your friend? Maybe talk about some shady shit?" Devon asked. I could feel my heart rising into my throat and threatening to choke me. "No. I'm going for a walk. That's it." I said. He raised a brow. "Well, then you won't mind if I tag along." He said, stretching his arms back and getting up from where he was sitting. I tightened my lips together, wanting to grind my teeth. "Fine." I said, expelling air from my lips.

I ended up having to take a detour and ACTUALLY walk around the town. I sent Jade a text message.

M: We've got a problem

Jade was actually walking out to her vehicle. She checked her phone.

J: What are you talking about? What problem?

M: Devon decided to tag along...I'm on foot from here. Meet me at the library, be discreet.

Jade let out a groan, jerking the door handle from its place and opening the car door. She got into the car and drove off.

Devon and I were walking alongside the various shops of downtown as it hadn't taken very long to get to where we needed to be. The library was the large building positioned down at the end of the street. Nestled amongst the business bureau looking buildings. People moved to and fro across the street. Some were talking on their cellphones, others were having in person conversations and some were not paying attention to life at all. "You're going to the library?" Devon asked. "I was looking at some books online and I heard that this library would have physical copies." I said. "Sure." He said, looking down at his phone. "Are you texting someone?" I asked. "Why do you care if I am? Scared of something?" He asked. I just narrowed my eyes.

Keeping my sight forward, I was going over in my mind how I could lose Devon and leave him lost down here before reappearing again. Meanwhile, Jade was sitting in the library at the computer desk. One of the interns approached her. "Can I help you search for anything?" He asked. Her eyes didn't leave the computer. "No, I have what I'm looking for." She said. "Okay...well...let me know if there's anything I can help you with." He said, nervously. There was an awkward silence before Jade lifted her eyes from the screen. He was still standing there. "Is there something more you want?" She asked. "Oh no...I was just uhh...right." He took off walking away. "Weirdo..." She muttered under her breath. She reached into her bag, grabbing her phone.

I found myself standing in front of a large glass window, looking at certain things on display. With Thanksgiving over, the Christmas season is looming over all of us. Overpriced and cheaply made products are on display. Fake snow is flooding department store windows as we all try to grasp a typical mid-western/northern Christmas. The only time I've seen snow was traveling through Atlanta on our way to Nevada. Down South, snow is scarce. I sighed on seeing the decorations and the gel clings hanging in the window. When it suddenly occurred to me that I needed to find a present to give to Shayne. "So what's the deal with you and your friends? Why are you guys such losers?" Devon asked. I wrinkled my brow in disgust. "Losers? You know, I love how you came all the way out to California to insult me. Nobody wants you here." I said. "I don't give a fuck what you like." He snapped. "Oh no? Then why are you so desperately tagging along with me?" I asked. He paused. "You know what? Forget it. Find your own way home." I said.
