Valentine's Day was on a Wednesday, which meant I still had to see Jade and Shayne for two more days before the final volleyball game and the bid to nationals. I wasn't going to let anything distract me from the task at hand. Terror Billy had switched seats with me in music class so I didn't have to sit beside Shayne. Shayne had become unfeeling and unnoticing. I didn't see much of Jade. She had been elusive, not that I was looking for her.
The week was over before I knew it and I was up at the school early in the morning on Saturday. Sylvia was there with me. We'd become really good friends especially after all the drama of Shayne and Jade. Sylvia apologized for telling Shayne the truth, but in all honesty she admitted to not knowing who he was. "It's alright. Sooner or later the truth would've come out." I said. "You seem to be doing much better, all things considered." She said. "I really am. I'm focusing more on myself and the things I like rather than just guys. It feels good to put myself first." While most of this was true, there was a small part of me that questioned if I had done the right thing.
"Come on, Jade!" Caylie shouted from the curb. "I'm coming..." Jade said. She was exhausted. Despite the air clearing up, her lungs struggled to take deep breaths. She felt sick...sicker than usual. She had always had issues with her health before, but this was different. She walked down to the sidewalk. Her oversized aviators were sitting on her face. She was wearing a black sabbath t-shirt that was a mile too big, sweatpants and tennis shoes. She wasn't wearing a bra, not that she wore them constantly, but they were fitting too tightly now. She couldn't even clasp them. Caylie and her were going to Gill's volleyball game which was a city over. "You look like shit." Caylie commented, noticing her attire. "Yeah, I'm very sick." She said. "Is it contagious?" She asked. "I keep throwing up, so probably just a virus. No fever." She said. "Should you go? We can stay here." Jade's mouth was dry. "No, I need something to drink and I'll be okay." She said, leaning her head back against the seat.
Caylie started the car and they drove off down the road. "So tell me what happened between you and Shayne." Caylie said. "I don't wanna talk about that." Jade groaned, placing her elbow against the window. "I think we need to talk about it. Did you have sex with him?" She asked. "We had sex after he and Gill broke up. It wasn't because we were trying to prove something or because there was no reason not to. It just happened. That's kinda what happens when two people love each other." Caylie looked over at her. "Are you in love with him?" She asked. "God, no. I could never be. He's a fucking mess." She said. "It was a mistake to kiss him. I should've stopped it, but there were so many feelings connected to it. I didn't really want to stop it." Jade said. "Have you seen him since?" She asked. The motion of the car was making her sick. "Stop. Stop the car." Jade said. Caylie pushed the brake pedal down and the car halted. Jade opened the door and vomited out onto the asphalt. "Christ...you're really sick, Jade. We should just go back." She said. She spit out the remaining bits. "No. I told you I needed to drink something. Just stop at whatever gas station you find." Jade said, slamming the door shut.
Caylie needed to get gas. As she was pumping the gas, Jade went inside to get a bottle of water and something to eat. She cruised the aisles, eating a chocolate bar. This was probably going to make the sickness worse, but she couldn't stop herself. "You've gotta pay for that." The cashier said. "Calm down." She said, placing the open candy bar on the counter along with the bottle of water and a box of Nerds candy. She walked out of the gas station just as Caylie was putting the nozzle back. "Candy? That's the best you can do?" She asked. "Leave me alone. It was the only thing that looked good." She said, getting into the car. "It doesn't taste as good coming back up." She said, fixing the gas cap. "That really stinks. Can we leave please?" Jade asked. "Yeah, come on, you big baby." She said. Both the girls got into the car and they drove off.
