"Put your hand here." Flynn said, reaching around Jade and adjusting her fingers that were wrapped around the club like object she was holding. He adjusted her stance, using his foot to push hers apart some more. He pushed his hips forward a little. "Keep your eyes on the ball." He said. Just then, the baseball came whooshing out of the thrower and towards her. She swung the bat and it shattered against the ball, shooting it across the expansive warehouse they were standing it. It clamored against the metal wall, loud enough to break your eardrums and shake the bearings loose. "You're definitely stronger than you look." Flynn laughed, running his fingers through his hair. "I wanted to ask you if you and your friends might be interested in crossing the border later this week to go to Oregon with me." It was Wednesday, currently. "How much later?" Jade asked, smashing the bat against the next ball. It landed about 25 feet away this time. "Tomorrow?" He suggested. Jade continued to hit the balls as they flew from the machine. She didn't answer. Flynn walked over and shut it off. "You're distant with me." He said. Jade sighed and leaned against the baseball bat.

Flynn came walking back over. "I just don't feel good about this." She said. "About...which part?" He asked. "About what I'm doing with you. You know that the day you walked into the department store, I had just broken up with my boyfriend." She said, looking over at him. "And where are you going with this?" He asked. "I just feel like shit about sleeping with you. It's nothing you've done, it's just how I feel. I don't know what's wrong with me...normally, this kind of stuff is easy." She said. "You also shouldn't feel bad about it if you two are not together anymore." He said. "I'm struggling with that part too." She said. Flynn reached over, putting his hand on her knee. "Listen, if you don't want to sleep with me anymore, then say. I mean, it's cool with me." "That's also a problem. Is I really wanna keep doing this." Flynn pulled his bottom lip back into his mouth. "Then why are we still sitting here talking?"

I pulled my phone out as it was ringing. My mother's name was flashing across the screen. I slid the button and answered the call, away from Shayne, Damien, Caylie and Jade who were having an all out Pictionary war. "Hello?" I answered, a chuckle tickling at my voice. "Hey, honey." "Hi mom. Is everything okay?" I asked. "Yes, I just wanted to make sure that you were okay." "Yeah, we're all just having fun up here." "Oh really? Doing?" "Well, right now we're playing Pictionary." I said, walking outside and shutting the door behind myself. "That's great, sweetheart." I could tell by the inflection in her voice, that something else was wrong. "What's going on really, mom?" I asked again. "There was a woman who was here earlier." She said. "What kind of woman?" I asked. "She was...a trashy looking woman. She was dressed like an 80's aerobic instructor." I wrinkled my brow before relaxing it on realizing who she was talking about. "She was wearing Barbie pink lipstick and blue eyeshadow?" I questioned. "Yeah, exactly." My mother responded. "That fucking bitch. What did she want?" I asked.

My mother took a deep breath. "First tell me you're not involved in whatever it is." I rolled my lips together. "I can't if I don't know what she's looking for." Which was the biggest lie of all. I knew. I knew she wanted to ask questions, or interrogate, all of us about where Caylie's father is. He's resting at the bottom of a lime covered trench, probably slathered with maggots and decomposed beyond belief...hopefully. "She was looking for that Caylie girl..." She said. I sighed. Goddamnit. "And what did you tell her?" "Tell me you're not—" "WHAT DID YOU TELL HER?" I said, in a louder voice. "I didn't tell her anything." My mother said. "Then I'm not involved." I said. "You're lying to me." "Mother, it's nothing you need to worry about." I said. "But—" "Look, I have to go. I'll talk to you tomorrow." I said. I hung up the phone, rushing back inside.

I walked into the kitchen, letting out a groan as I shuffled through the fridge looking for more beer. "Everything okay?" Jade asked as I was coming in from the kitchen. I handed them drinks apiece. "Yeah, that was my mother calling." "What did she want?" Damien asked, twisting the cap off the beer. "That wasn't a twist off..." I said. "Right? It's kind sexy." Caylie said, looking over at him grinning. "She wanted to know about...Charlene." A silence fell over all of us. "What about her?" Jade asked. "Apparently, she's been asking questions again. She wants to know where we are." "Did your mother tell her where we are?" "She says no." I answered. "We shouldn't trust that." Jade said. I wrinkled my brow. "Are you saying that my mother would lie to me?" "You'd be surprised what parents will do." Jade said. "My mother would never!" I snapped. "You don't know that until you're put in that position!" Jade challenged. "Okay, let's just calm down." Shayne said, cutting in between us; fire fighting like always.
