a/n: this chapter takes place during the last two episodes of season nine and a little after, the space in between seasons 9 and 10 we don't see.

evelyn was now back at the bau, happier than ever and madison was thriving as well. she had moved into the nursery a couple months back and started crawling, mostly crawling to spencer. it had been deemed safe for evelyn to live fully on her own again. no more having someone stay the night just in case. she had enjoyed the peace and quiet (well as quiet as it could be with a baby), but never minded spencer coming over or even sneaking in during the night or early morning before she woke up. there was a case in texas, evelyn still not wanting to leave madison just yet. she knew madison would be in good hands, but she still wasn't ready to leave her baby in a different state just yet. she woke up to her daily alarm, groaning yet getting up and getting ready. once the nanny had arrived she kissed madison's head and leaving, driving to the BAU. she walked in, grabbing some coffee and a muffin, going to penelope's bat cave. "hey pen, anything i missed yet?" evelyn asks, sitting in a chair next to her. "not yet." penelope says cheerfully. they continued working the case evelyn going to get the two of them dinner when they got hungry. as she got back her phone rang, seeing it was hotch and answering. "weird that you're calling me, i'd expect you to-" she said, hotch cutting her off. "evelyn." he said sternly. "what?" she replied, his tone making her nervous as she walked back into the bar cave. "spencer was shot in the neck. he's on the way to the hospital now, but you and penelope might want to get over here. it's not looking good." he explains. evelyn freezes in her spot as the words left his mouth. "yea okay got it, we'll be there soon." she says as if she was in a daze and hangs up, looking at penelope with teary eyes. "we gotta go to texas right now." she explains. "what why?" penelope asks, obviously confused. "spencer was shot in the neck and it's not looking good." she explains, penelope immediately jumped up, grabbing evelyn hand and rushing out. "where is he? is he okay?" evelyn asked as she rushed into the hospital waiting room. this was the first time she had left the state since having madison, and she didn't even have madison with her. "he's stable. he's not awake yet, but you can go wait with alex if you'd like." hotch says. evelyn nods, hotch taking her to his room. as the pair entered alex looked up, standing up and hugging evelyn as she got closer. "what happened?" evelyn asked as hotch walked out, shutting to door to give them privacy. "we were at the restaurant the pastor was at and he started shooting, spencer pushed me out of the way and got shot. it should've been me." alex explains. "oh alex don't say that, he's strong. he'll be okay." evelyn said, sitting next to spencer, sighing softly. a few more hours went by, evelyn and alex still waiting for spencer to wake up. after what seemed like forever he woke up, smiling as he saw the two of them. "how long have you two been here?" he asked hoarsely. evelyn and alex's heads shot up, evelyn immediately hugging him. "oh thank god you're okay." she said, spencer laughing and hugging her back. "eh of course i'm okay, it's no big deal." he replied. "spencer you got shot." alex said. "in the neck." evelyn adds on. "well when you put it like that..." he drifts off. "like what? how it is?" evelyn scoffs playfully, crossing her arms. "is madison here? i wanna see her." spencer said. evelyn shook her head. "i was in a rush to get here so i had her stay with the nanny. i was too worried about your dumb ass." she says. "but i can get her on facetime for you." she continues. spencer nods and smiles. "please." he says. evelyn nodding as alex and spencer began taking. she quickly facetimed the nanny, her smile immediately dropping when she saw the sight on the screen. the nanny was in the floor, dead, covered in her own blood, stabbed the exact way she was, knife still in her chest. "we have a baby together and you didn't tell me?" a very familiar voice said, sending shivers down evelyn's back. the camera then panned to a sleeping madison in her crib. "don't you dare touch her." evelyn hissed. "or what?" the voice taunted, picking madison up. "say bye bye to madison now. she's gonna come with me now." the voice hissed, ending the call. "NO-" evelyn started, slowly lowering the phone as tears ran down her face.
