Mateo had followed Eric out to put the extension chord in the trunk of his car and couldn't stop thinking about that night. It was difficult, sure, but also really special. And if it weren't for the difficult he wouldn't have gotten the special. At least not right then. Maybe at a later time.
It's not that Eric didn't know when it first went off. At some point fairly early Mateo had said something. It's not like it was something he had to hide now, and he felt Eric deserved to know.
While they were alone earlier, Mateo had explained the situation in more details, figuring then was as good a time as any. There was already tension, at least more context might help. Eric had said he'd be there for him, and when he left, Mateo thought he was looking for an escape.
But he wasn't.
He was looking for a compromise. A way for Mateo to enjoy himself while still having to deal with his status. In the literal way with the wedding, sure, but also just in his life, he showed he'd be there.
"Thank you."
Eric turned to look at him after he shut his trunk, "You don't need to thank me."
Mateo stepped closer, glancing around to be sure they were alone, "I feel like I should. I wouldn't have blamed you if you'd run off and not come back. This is a lot to deal with."
Eric offered a slight smile as he cupped his face, giving him a gentle kiss before he spoke again, "It is a lot, but I think that's only more reason for me to stick with you. Heavy situations feel lighter when you're not dealing with them by yourself."
