Emma had been dreading this move since she first found out about it months ago.  Moving houses would have been one thing.  Moving cities would have been one thing.  Moving to a nearby state even would have been one thing.

But she was moving across the country to California.  Two entire time zones away.  She was leaving all of her best friends, she was leaving all of her extended family, she was leaving her job, her school.  Everything.  Gone.

Then she found out the day before they were set to leave that Jonah, who she was really starting to warm up to, who really made her mom happy... wasn't coming with them.  She tried not to care, and move on, but she saw how miserable her mom was, and how miserable Jonah was.

Then came the move, and none of them took it well.  Emma didn't take it the worst, but she definitely hated it.  She tried to hide it, not wanting to make her mom feel worse or anything, but one night after they'd been there a few months she couldn't hold it anymore.

She broke down.  It was just setting in that everything was wrong.  She didn't fit in at school, she hated being away from nearly everyone she loved, and her mom was just so distant.

This seemed to get her attention though.

Emma was alone in her room just sobbing when she heard her door open and her mom was there, "Emma.. honey what's wrong?"

Emma sniffled and just wiped her eyes, but the tears wouldn't stop, "I-I wanna go home." She saw her mom something, so she quickly added, "To St. Louis."

Amy came in and sat down on Emma's bed, opening her arms for a hug and trying not to tear up herself, "Oh, I know.  I miss home too, I really do.  This move has been so much."

Emma hid away in her mom's embrace, hiding her face in her neck and just holding her tight.  One of the only familiar things she felt like she still had was hugs from her mom.  She continued to sob, unable to speak.

"I thought this would be the right thing to do.  I mean, for you guys and for me.  But I know you're miserable and I'm not liking it here and Parker is just... I can tell he misses home too.  I thought maybe it'd get easier, but it just hasn't.  I'm sorry, Em."

Emma pulled away a little bit, "What if we go back?"

Amy sighed, "I don't know if that's a great idea.  Maybe we can... maybe we can go on a trip soon.  You were saying last week you might like to see the mountains.  What if we took a trip to a cabin in the mountains?"

Emma's eyes got big, "Like an actual vacation?"

Amy nodded, lightly brushing Emma's hair out of her face, "Yep.  Just you and me and your brother.  I'll try to keep work stuff to a minimum, to none if I can, so I can spend as much time with you two as possible."

Emma smiled, "That sounds really nice.  Maybe during spring break?  That's in a few weeks."

Amy kissed her forehead, "I'll see what I can do.  I'm hoping we can visit gone soon too.  I heard from grandma there might be a wedding happening soon, so there's that too.  We'll just have to see what happens.  But I will try and plan for a trip to the mountains for us."

Emma hugged her one more time, "Thanks mom."

Unseen to her, her mom looked incredibly relieved.  Maybe, just maybe, it'd be okay.
