Amy was frustrated with Jonah avoiding her questions, finally asking, "Jonah. Why did you stay here?"
"Why do you think, Amy?" Jonah stared at her, clearly still hurt from their breakup. But he felt she deserved to know that much.
Amy could feel her eyes stinging. She needed to fix this. She at least needed to try. She couldn't stand the fact that she'd hurt him so much. "You know, when I first met you, I thought you were the most annoying person I'd ever met."
She saw Jonah kind of roll his eyes, like he wasn't happy to hear that brought up, but it was true. In the beginning, they became close friends, but she truly struggled to get along with him. He was just so optimistic, and it was so much sometimes.
She continued, "With your 'moments of beauty,' 'seize the day' crap, like you'd watched Dead Poet's Society too many times."
Jonah stopped her, clearly trying to clear the air a bit, "Shows what you know, you can't watch Dead Poets Society too many times."
Amy continued, ignoring the remark, "I hated how cheesy you were. I hated how 'woke' you were. I hated how often you used the word 'artisan'."
She took a deep breath. This was the biggest part of what she had to say to him. How he changed her, improved everything, showed her how things could be different.
"But most of all... I hated how you believed that life could be better than it was." Amy was trying not to let the tears slip from her eyes. The love of her life was in front of her, hearing her pour her heart out and for what? There was a strong chance this wouldn't change anything.
"And yet, here we are. And my life is so much better than it was. Because of you." For the first time since she'd started talking she made eye contact with him. He didn't look annoyed or dismissive anymore. He was listening. He was considering, she could see it. Maybe she could win him over after all.
"And I- I screwed it all up, I know that. But you waited six years for me. So if I have to wait an-"
She didn't see him coming until his hands were on her face and his lips were on hers. A kiss. She couldn't believe he was there, in her space, really kissing her.
He pulled away, back with that easy tone to clear the air, "I'm sorry, it's just- you were talking so much, I didn't know what to do."
She smiled back up at him, just so grateful he was willing to give her another shot.
