Mateo had learned pretty quickly that Eric liked surprising him. When they first started dating Eric would come see him at the store sometimes. At first he'd just tap him, but when they got close enough, Eric would hug him. It was startling at first, but it was kind of cute, so Mateo didn't really mind. He loved seeing Eric after all.
After the pandemic hit, Eric wasn't coming by as often unless it wasn't busy, and he tended to just say hi verbally instead of giving hugs. It kind of sucked. Mateo missed the surprise hugs. But he understood why Eric stopped too.
Then the store closed, and Mateo was set to start at Sturgis and Sons. He'd helped get everything set up for a week or so before opening, and finally, it was the first day the store had opened. He went in by himself pretty early and met Cheyenne, Glenn, Nia, and some others he hadn't met. They must've been scheduled at different times, or maybe today was their first day. They seemed nice enough.
Opening went well! They got kind of busy after a few hours, but not too bad. Mateo was about to go outside for a break when he felt arms wrap around his torso, stopping him.
"Surprise!"
