When merle Dixon followed the gunshots and screams, he wasn't sure what he was going to find but what he got certainly wasn't what he ever wanted to see. a circle of a scattered mess of bodies, some without heads. The ground was covered in so much blood the earth could no longer absorb it, creating puddles, and in the center of it was his brother's girl. Sitting, legs crooked, her staff in one hand, gun in the other. Her small knife was poking out of her heel, also glinting red. Her chest bare and her leggings lower than where she usually wears them, a view merle would typically very much enjoy, but she was covered in so much blood she might as well have bathed in it. "kit?" he said, trying to get her attention but she didn't budge. Merle carefully walked closer to the woman, really not wanting to end up like these other guys while she was still dazed. He raised an eyebrow at the ear between her feet, laying on the ground as he knelt.
"kit kat," he tried again. This time she slowly looked up, remnants of blood starting to dry from her mouth down to her neck. "merle," she whispered; she looked around, expecting everything that had just happened to of been a dream only to be met with her aftermath her eyes filled with tears. "I-I"
"you did the right thing," merle said sternly "don't you dare feel bad, girl. ur a grimes. ur a Dixon. ur Kitten fucking Adams; you bow down to no one, especially sick fucks like these, ya hear me?" kit sniffled but nodded.
"get up now we gotta go; geeks'll be show'n up" kit nodded, retracting her blades before standing, her heel blade clicking back into place now that her feet were flat on the ground. kit slipped her staff and gun back into their places, freeing her hands to pull her leggings back to the middle of her abdomen as she stared at her shredded orange tank top, bra, and her once white scarf, now red.
"did they" merle hated himself for even asking but was more than relieved when she shook her head no, only to realize her slight dilemma. Merle took off his backpack of stuff he scavenged and handed her a black wifebeater. She slipped it on before going to grab her bow and quiver. At the same time, merle did a quick pat-down on the bodies taking what he could before looking back to kit, who still hadn't said a word, seeing a deer on the ground behind her. "urs?" she nodded "kickin ass and still bring dinner, damn girl might survive as a Dixon after all" kit snorted at his absurdity at a time like this. after stripping everything they could scavenge from the car including gas and two radios. Chatter briefly came thru that this crew belonged to terminus. While merle secured kits, deer in the back of the truck kit set fire to the car. Why? Because she damn well wanted to.
When they got back to the house, jody was too thrilled to see his uncle. He failed to notice his mother covered in blood, but the two other men didn't. Merle took control, though, and shooed her away to get cleaned up while he filled them in while he and jody handled the deer. After their deer steak dinner, they unanimously decided terminus was no longer an option, and the farm was too close, so in the morning, they would move, stick to dirt roads and trails and avoid it. So during watch, they took turns swapping out the meat every four hours in the oven, bagging the newly made deer jerky for their journey, along with the pecans Jody and Judith spent the afternoon collecting.
Kit lost track of how long they were driving when something caught her eye.
"stop!" merle cursed at her sudden outburst but did so. Kit ignored the calls of her name as she ran back to the barely noticeable driveway; she was in awe of the sight in front of her, a hobbit house of sorts. Large vines, bushes of flowers, a large circular wooden door, a garden with a greenhouse, a shed next to that, and a smokehouse sitting in a little patio area.
"Woah," Jody breathed, stepping up next to her
"Nice find, sis, woah is right," t-dog chuckled
"what's on top?" Jody asked, pointing to the grass mounds of a roof
"solar panels, I think, if they work, we could have electricity," ty told him,
"well what are we waiting for we gonna scope it out or not" merle said walking up to the door knocking. He waited till bangs were heard from the other side. Jody stood back, holding Judith as the three adults nodded to merle, who opened the door. Two adults and two teenage boys stumbled out, easily dispatched of.
"whys he wear'n a dress" merle scoffed, eyeing the adult male
"probably the hippie sorts, live off the grid kind ya know?" ty offered
the inside was beautiful, with combos of wood and rock, and the windows had wood panels of their own to shut and lock. Kit assumed it was for winter to help insolation; there were two fireplaces, four bedrooms total, two and a half bathrooms, a parlor, library, kitchen, dining area, wine and cold cellar, and a back door to the patio. They all settled in for the night, locking the window panels and the doors; they each chose somewhere to sleep, and kit took the master room.
The following day kit stayed at the house with the kids while the three men went to check things out around them and try and find a map of the area. kit and the kids spent all day in the garden collecting and clearing out the bad. kit even cleaned the smokehouse, which was easier than she thought; given there were only remnants of veggies on one of the racks, kit could easily assume they were vegetarians. When the men came back, they had two trucks full of stuff they could use. Along with a map of the area, apparently, it wasn't significantly picked thru, and they assumed it because of the horde standing outside an urgent care a block away. Everything that day had been great until evening came and kit had a new reason to worry when Judith developed a cough.
kit was looking out the parlor window when Jody came to stand next to her. "mom, what if it's like what everyone else had?"
"she doesn't have the same symptoms, just a cough."
"Is she gonna be okay?"
"Yeah, course she is" kit hugged Jody tight, contemplating how she would get in that urgent care and out alive.
"kit, can I have a minute" t-dog nodded outside
"sure," she kissed jody's head, "go get ready for bed, kiddo" she followed T outside, and he walked over to the passenger side of the new truck, grabbing something before approaching her.
"here, got this for you while we were looking around" he handed her a red leather jacket and a reaper patch on the sleeve, she smiled a little.
"made me laugh a little cause ya know Daryl has the angel wings, couldn't find you your own badge though" they both chuckled "we'll see them again. you just gotta make sure you stay in the light until then" kit looked at him confused " merle went into detail" kit sighed shaking her head "I ain't judging believe me they were sick. Whatever you did, however you did, it saved your life. just make sure you keep using those killer skills on the bad only."
"Yeah. Thanks, T, really. for everything"
"Hey, no sweat, we're family" kit hugged him quickly but tight
"I'm gonna check the perimeter mind keeping an eye on the kids?"
"sure thing, Lil mama, watch your back out there" kit watched him walk inside, slipping on her new jacket. she rolled her shoulders, walking into the forest on a mission
