~flashback~
One week before the outbreak
Kit sat at her desk, putting the final details she needed on the transfer request papers.
"Kit, Mrs. Smith is here." Kit looked up at the graying woman wearing pink scrubs
"Thank you, Jenny. Please tell Kevin we will be at his office shortly." Jenny nodded, leaving. Kit sighed, rising out of her seat; she always hated giving bad news. She left her office to go to the waiting room. "Smith," she called.
Lucille approached her wearing a blue striped sweater, a bright smile, and her blonde hair curled in its usual style.
Both women walked out of the waiting room. "Thank you for coming in today," kit said
"It's no problem you've done more than my usual doctor."
"It's still an hour drive just to get here" kit nodded at a passing Colleague as they rounded a corner. "No husband again?"
"No, he uh had an appointment. No scrubs today?" Lucille deflected
"You're my only patient today; then I'm off."
"This isn't your office?" Lucille said, confused as they stopped in front of a door.
"This is actually our last consultation." Kit smiled sadly, knocking on the door.
"Does that mean you found something on the MRI scans?" Lucille asked; kit nodded as the door opened, both doctors greeting each other.
"Lucille, this is Dr. Reynolds, a trusted colleague of mine." Kit introduced as they stepped into his office. "I took the liberty of getting a referral pre-approved, so he specifically would be your attending physician depending on what you choose."
"What did you find?" Lucille asked, sitting.
Kit bit her lip; Kevin sighed. "Adams," he said softly, giving her an understanding look. She nodded, squeezing Lucille's shoulder as she passed, closing the door again behind her. Kit stood there a second, exhaling; cancer was always a touchy area for kit ever since it took her father; re-centering herself, she went back to her office to finish any last-minute work. Twenty minutes later, there was a slight knock on her door; kit looked up to see Lucille's heartbroken expression.
"Lucille?"
"I just found out I have cancer, and my husband is cheating on me with my best friend. I could use a drink and a friend right now. Since you're no longer my doctor, I figured-"
"Sounds like you need more than a drink," kit said, grabbing her purse and a small stack of papers. "I got just the thing. Come on," kit nodded, locking her office behind them. Kit stopped at the nurse station before they passed it.
"Jenny," the older woman looked up from her computer, "fax these over to Harrison memorial to Dr. Reeds. Its request of transfer for Mr. Grimes, boards already approved just let me know what day he will be arriving."
"Course," Jenny smiled, taking the papers.
"Thank you" kit turned to Lucille as they started walking again "you ever shot a gun?"
"No," Lucille sniffled
"Well, that's about to change."
~ 2 bottles of wine later ~
Lucille was doubled over, laughing so hard she was crying. "So - so you just pretended to be asleep on the couch when they came out of the bedroom?" She wiped her tears away
"Hey, I was new to college life. Besides, I was hiding an ice pack on my vagina under the blanket. What was I supposed to do? Hop up and say hey, good morning! Thanks for the excellent fuckery. As you can see, you've split me in half. Would you like some bacon and eggs?
They both started into a whole new wave of hysterics till their cheeks hurt. They slowly calmed down, sipping their wine.
"Thank you, kit. For everything and the shooting lesson."
"Take it."
"The gun?" Lucille looked at her, shocked
"Yeah," she shrugged, "shits getting crazy in the world. Plus, you can use it to shoot that $600 leather jacket POS in the ass." Lucille chucked out of tears to cry on the matter.
"What do I even do about them?"
"Personally, I would say fuck em' you're too good for them anyway."
Lucille raised a skeptical brow "is that what you would do?"
Kit snorted "no, what I would do would give me prison time" Lucille chuckled. She's only known kit for a little over a month and could believe that.
"Well then fuck men and their stupidity" she raised her glass
"Amen to that," kit said, clinking their glasses
