Zhan had this suspicious, murky feeling about the event mentioned by the emperor since the start. The officer didn't have an ounce of faith in the goodwill of the said emperor. Maybe, it was because of the unpleasant feeling he had about this person since the first time the prince mentioned him. Which only got stronger by the way the other person hid his identity from the prince for years keeping Yibo in the dark. Though he would never admit it, he couldn't help the jealousy that grew in him every time he came across the emperor. Zhan's professional side knew better than to let his emotions take over his ability to analyze the situation and the people around him. But it wasn't just that. Zhan, for some reason, has these undefinable feelings about the whole setting. With all these attacks and malicious plots encircling around the prince like a web, the officer couldn't even put complete faith in his own shadow, much less another human. And Zhan really hoped for it to be just his own fears and nothing else. But deep down in his heart, Zhan knew that hoping wouldn't make things better. Not when there is someone out there trying to hurt the prince at every step.

But Zhan also knew that whatever the emperor said was true. He also knew there would be no use in arguing. Because whatever the emperor said, though he didn't like even a bit of it, Zhan knew it was inevitable. Being the heir to the throne, the prince's life would never be safe, even one day when the prince will finally take the crown. It is an endless, tiring battle of power and politics that will never end. After all, there is no peaceful life for the person who sits on the throne. That's the price one has to pay in return for the power. But in his dismay, the prince didn't even want it yet was he paying a dear price for it. Thus the officer couldn't help but feel sympathetic that the prince was going through all of it just because his uncle wanted him to. Sometimes Zhan couldn't help but think if Lan Qiren really loved his nephew so much, why not just let the prince live own his life and choose someone else for the throne? There must be at least one person other than Yibo in the entire Gusu who could take the throne, right? Then again, he never understood these bloodline and family politics. All he understood was he should protect the person he loves.

It was just that, he couldn't brush off the menacing feeling that kept increasing in his gut as the time came nearer when the prince had to leave for the ceremony costing him the sleep of his nights. He kept on rechecking the security arrangements kept talking with the security team, including the emperor Nie's royal guards. And everything seemed to be... perfect. The security was top-notch. That was the very reason he chose to leave the prince's side so he could inspect the perimeter by himself and make sure that the area was free of any threat. But what caught his sight was something he expected, dreaded, and hoped would not happen. Which was not just one or two but a handful of snippers at several places. It was almost as if the guards themselves turned into the assassins. All with one target, the prince. For them, the prince might be just another person they were hired to kill. But for Zhan, Yibo is the person for whose sake he wouldn't think twice before killing or getting killed if that could keep his beloved safe.
