Derek smiled as he pulled his ringing phone from his pocket. Your name came up across the screen. He answered it quickly, not wanting you to wait for him to answer. "(Y/N)! Hey!" He said cheerfully.
"Hey Derek. I need a favour. Could you please pick up some balloons from the store. Isaac said you were there. I need the creamy coloured ones that say engagement and happy engagement on them. I can pay you back when I see you later." You asked. Derek's smile fell. Scott had mentioned that he'd seen you out with someone but there hadn't been any indication from you that you were serious enough to get engaged to someone.

"Sure... yeah. I'll get them now." He said. He hung up. His stomach started to ache. He wished more than anything he hadn't picked up the phone. He plodding slowly to the party section and stared at the balloons you'd asked for. Peter would often say he missed his chance with you. But what did Peter know. Apparently he'd been right about this. Derek couldn't bring himself to pull the little bag of balloons off the shelf. They hung there in front of him as if a taunt was sent by whoever you were going to get engaged too. He snatchd at the bags and headed to the counter. Maybe if he got there with enough time he could tell you how he feels. Maybe he could give the two of you another chance to end up together. He sighed as the person in the queue in front of him poured a bag of loose change on the conveyor belt. Derek sighed and glanced at his watch.

"Oh, come on. Please go faster! I gotta tell my best friend I'm in love with them!" Derek said a little louder than he meant to. With another sigh he fished forty dollars from his wallet, much more than he had needed to pay and slammed it down, hurrying past and heading to the car park. He was in his car before the person that followed him out of the store could catch up. Then he tore out of the car park and sped to meet you. He pulled up at your house and saw several cars parked outside. Hurrying to the door you pulled it open before he could knock.

"I love you." He said. You paused, stunned at what he said.

"We need the balloons." Lydia called from the house.

"My friends got engaged and she told us at the last minute so we're throwing a party but we're in a bit of a rut." You explained slowly.

"Your friend is getting engaged?" He asked.

"Yes. To my friend from out of town. He came home the other day to propose to her." You explained. Derek looked relieved. Then he blushed violently. "Love you too, Derek." You said with a jovial tone as you playfully punched his arm and took the bag of balloons he was holding. He followed you inside, planning on offering his help.
