Most Hermit cards are in shades of blue, featuring a mysterious cloaked figure. The most predominant visual aspect is the light from the lantern. That light is the focus of this card; it represents our own spark of divinity. The light of that spark is what should guide our paths. This card represents no longer listening to others; even, in this situation, removing ourselves from their influence. It is our own truth that should lead us. The Hermit is sometimes seen as a teacher or a guide. In reality, this card is about an act of self-discovery. Having a clear, bright light—that knowing that guides our steps—can attract others who want to follow or learn. This is not a role the Hermit seeks; it is more the purview of the Hierophant, who is called to teach. Instead, the Hermit, by definition, is solitary; his life is an example, but his journey is not a public classroom.

The Universal Waite Hermit is so archetypal in appearance that he is almost a caricature. He is a wise old man using his truth to light his path. His staff, which is a very large wand, represents his will, which has grown strong over the years and supports him on his journey.

Core meaning: Retreating from distractions to determine your own truth.

The Legacy card shows a man with a careworn face, tall mountains, and deep valleys. His journey has not been an easy one. His truths were hard won. A brightly glowing crystal tops his wand, symbolizing the union and complete integration of his truth and his will.

In the Shadowscapes card, the Hermit has ascended great spiritual heights and is nose to nose with the Divine. His truth and universal truth are about to become one. He carries no staff at all, indicating that he has no will separate from that of his truth.
