When things are not going our way, we usually try to change them. In many cases, we can. But we do not have total control over the world and cannot deny that sometimes things we consider bad, unpleasant, or unfortunate do happen. The Ten of Swords clearly shows that something has gone badly wrong. But more specifically, it shows the point of giving in, giving up, or surrendering. We may have tried valiantly to fix the situation or called it quits at the first sign of trouble. The main point is that the decision has been made to cease.

The Universal Waite card shows someone who is completely done in. The lack of actual blood in the picture reminds us that this is symbolic and not literal. He has not died; he's just taken all he's going to take. And so, he lies down and waits for the sunrise. There is more a sense of relief and calmness than of tragedy or sadness.
Core meaning: Surrender to unpleasant or unfortunate circumstances.
In the Legacy card, the scene is much different. This man is railing and struggling. He is not going quietly at all. The situation may be over, but he's not done torturing himself about it.
