Spreads are the framework for any reading. They provide shape and structure for the interpretation and ultimate answer or advice given to the querent. Tarot readers all have their own opinions about what makes a good spread, how many cards are ideal, how many spreads a reader should be familiar with, or even whether or not an actual spread should be used. As with anything related to tarot, try out as many options as possible before making a decision. Most teachers encourage students to start with smaller spreads, such as one to three cards. I think three-card readings are the best to start with, because three cards provide enough material to work with and allow the reader to practice using some of the techniques taught in this book. One-card readings can be very, very insightful, especially for readers who are quite intuitive and love finding meanings in their cards that go beyond core meanings.
