Five of Pentacles

Physical needs represented by the Five of Pentacles come in many varieties. The need can be financial, health-related, or, perhaps, looking for help moving furniture. Or they could be more basic: somewhere to sleep, something to eat, something to wear. The Five of Pentacles card usually includes an indication that help is close at hand, so the situation, while unpleasant, is likely, not dire. The card also often suggests that the person in need is not noticing the help or opportunities available.

In the Universal Waite card, the figures are clearly in need, as shown by the crutches, ragged clothing, and lack of shoes on a snowy night. They are walking past a church, symbolizing a resource for help, yet they walk past as if not noticing it. It is unknown whether they are consciously ignoring that option for some reason or they just don't see it.

Core meaning:
Physical need.

The Legacy card shows a woman begging. Her expression is desolate, but also stubborn and demanding. The church window shines in the background. As in the Universal Waite card, we are left to wonder why she does not turn in that direction.

The Shadowscapes card shows a distraught woman outside a colorful church window and surrounded by beautiful abundance. Being so wrapped up in her need, she sees none of it.
