Two of Swords

The heart and the mind are not always in agreement. Usually, though, one or the other is more persuasive, and so a decision is easily made. However, there are times when they are equally compelling and we find ourselves paralyzed. The Two of Swords represents this uncomfortable state. Our logical self is urging a certain choice; our intuitive self prefers a different direction. Until we decide, there is nothing to do but maintain the current situation. Unfortunately, this card does not say how long the state will last or which side will win. Because this is a sword and not a cup, the mind does have the home field advantage.

The Universal Waite card shows a woman sitting on a bench holding two swords, which represent the decision she must make. The blindfold shows her reliance on logic and intellect. Behind her, the sea and moon represent the pull of her emotional side, her heart.

Core meaning: A conflict between heart and mind.

The Legacy card shows the balance between mind and heart through the two swords and the purple scarf flowing over her eyes. Because the pose is different from the Universal Waite image, there is less tension and more peace.

In the Shadowscapes card, the figure holds the two swords and seems ready to reject the reasons of the heart, as he refuses to look at the hanging heart or accept the flower from the swan. This card implies that the decision is difficult. The swords seem to suit the man, but the heart and flower glow with warmth and light that are strongly compelling.
