Sometimes events move very quickly, and this card represents those moments. During these periods of our lives, our control varies. Things may be in perfect order, or so we think, but once set in motion, they can be affected by outside influences. In addition, we may assume a plan will have a certain outcome, but unforeseen consequences can arise. In the Eight of Wands, swift action is the only guarantee. It can upset the best-laid plans. It can beneficially facilitate everything. It can sweep us off our feet and carry us in another direction entirely.

The Universal Waite card shows events already in motion heading toward their ultimate conclusion. In this card, the focus is on the events, their motion, and our lack of further control in the situation.

Core meaning:
Swift movement.

The Legacy card takes a slightly different view. The wands are all set in place. Everything appears to be in order. The archer in the background represents the constellation Sagittarius and an unexpected, swift energy. How that incoming energy will affect the situation is unknown.

The Shadowscapes card shows even less certainty. The vagaries of the wind will take the seeds of her intent where they will. And, even then, more uncertainty ... will they fall in good soil, will they find enough water, will sunlight reach them? With this card, there is far less illusion of control and even more likelihood of being carried in some unknown direction.
