Core meaning:
The right thing at the right time in the right place.

The Legacy card represents a balance of apparent contradictions: the angel is suspended in air yet stationary, and she holds fire and water. Blending opposites in perfectly equal parts would negate both. This angel can mix them to create something that is neither.

The Shadowscapes card illustrates the blending of opposites: scales and feathers, fire and water. Her creation resembles a yin/yang symbol. Everything holds the seed of its opposite.

The Universal Waite card presents a stereotypical Christian devil image. The devil figure represents the behavior or situation that holds us in bondage. The male and female characters with tails and horns make a mockery of what it means to be human. The chains appear loose enough that escape would be simply a matter of choice, but the figures make no progress.

Core meaning:
A choice, action, or situation contrary to your best interest.

The Legacy card highlights the attractiveness and seductiveness of temptation. As in the Hanged Man card, the hourglass is on its side, representing time standing still and the lack of progress. Unlike the peaceful Hanged Man, though, this figure is tortured.

The Shadowscapes card focuses on the fragility of bondage: the thread binding her is thin, and besides, the key is right above. It also shows the completeness of the bondage: she is captured in a circle (a circle is a sign of completeness). Her heart, in the grasp of the dancing devil above her, has been stolen so that she no longer has a moral compass.
