It has been said that the four suits of the tarot represent what is needed to make something happen. Wands represent the inspiration; cups, the desire; swords, the plan; and pentacles, the actual physical manifestation. The Three of Pentacles often includes all those aspects but always focuses on the actual physical item being created. This card represents the partial completion of a work in progress. The Universal Waite card shows three figures. Two are holding plans and represent the swords mentioned above. The artisan is discussing the project with the others and getting feedback or direction. The inclusion of three figures and the discussion of the work in progress highlight the idea of teamwork, or working together to achieve something. Notice, though, that the artisan is elevated above the two others, a reminder that in this card, he is the main character.
Core meaning: A goal is manifesting.
The Legacy card features a close-up of an artist working intently on his project. His attention is on the process, on what he's doing. There are no other figures or even any evidence of plans or directions. The focus is clearly on the act of creating and of revealing, bit by bit, what is being created.
In the Shadowscapes card, a woman and man work as one. The man holds the salamander, or the seed of the idea, and supports the woman. She focuses the energy that creates the art. Here, as in the Universal Waite card, there is teamwork. And like the Universal Waite, there is also an elevation of the artist, meaning that the focus is on the creator and creation.
