Some troubles come in the form of a crisis that requires immediate action. Others are complex and demand much thought and reflection. In addition, they can be mentally or emotionally exhausting. In these instances, we need a time-out. This is the situation in the Four of Swords. It is a withdrawal from events to regroup. The implication in this card is that by taking this time away and quieting the mind, we may then hear a solution to our troubles.

The Universal Waite card shows a man lying in a church, representing a place of safety and higher wisdom. The pose and the casket remind us of death. In a sense, it is a death—the end of a problem put to rest by a practical solution.
