-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I walked across an empty landI knew the pathway like the back of my handI felt the earth beneath my feetSat by the river and it made me completeI came across a fallen treeI felt the branches of it looking at meIs this the place we used to love?Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

The leaves crunch beneath my feet as I walk the path only me and Dean know. The air is crisp and cool, but I still pull my jacket in closer. It's been a while since I've been able to come back here only because the memories attached to the place are too painful to revisit. I close my eyes and remember the moment that Dean and I found this place.

It's a beaten path off the main one, so not many people know about it unless they are straying off path. About two hundred yards towards the city is a clearing, and in that clearing is a small bench next to a big tree that had fallen down because of a storm that happened long ago. This tree is so big that we actually carved into it to make a little cave where we could hang out, away from everyone else.

It's been years since I've come to this place, but I've had a feeling that I needed to come back here for some reason. I walk the two yards to the clearing, taking in a deep breath of fresh air. The city is filled with pollution and debris, but this spot is pure and free from all those harsh chemicals.

It's one of the reasons why Dean and I love coming to this place.

I haven't thought about Dean in years, but recently, I've not been able to sleep without him popping into my dreams.

It may have been years since we've both been in the same place, much less the same city, but I can still see us hanging out here, loving each other, kissing one another, and becoming one underneath the stars. These are simpler times I wish I could go back to, but life isn't fair that way.

I walk over to the tree and touch it gently with my fingers. There's something about this place that will always give me comfort, even if I was heartbroken when Dean left me. Why he did, I'll never know, but I gave that man five years of my life only for him to disappear one day. I never knew what happened to him or if he's even alive, but I often find myself wanting to come back to this place in hopes it'll give me some answers.

I walk over to the bench and sit down, looking at the city below. I rest my right arm on the back of the bench when I feel something I know wasn't there before. Underneath my fingertips is a carving. While it's possible that anyone could have found this place, it's unlikely. My heart flutters when I see Dean's name carved on the bench.

He was here recently. This wasn't there the last time I was here. Is this Dean's way of telling me that he's still thinking of me? That he still loves me? That he's okay? Regardless, I got the answer I didn't know I needed.

Smiling, I take out my pocket knife so I can carve my name right next to his.

Our place.
