Meg

I step into my room and answer the call. I sit on my bed as Jai closes the door and comes in to sit down.
"Megan?" he asks.
"I'm here," I say.
"I've missed you," he tells me. I don't respond. "Don't you miss me?" he whispers.
"What do you want Spencer?" I ask gently.
"I want you back," he tells me. "Can't you come home? I want to work this out."
"I'm not coming home until I've finished my mission trip," I reply.
"Megs," he breathes. I close my eyes and shudder at the nickname. "I need you."
"I don't know what you want me to say to that," I tell him evenly.
"Tell me you need me, too," he whispers.
"But I don't," I respond.
He sighs dejectedly. "Please come back. I just want to talk to you face to face. Can't we just work this out?"
"There is nothing more to work out, Spencer. I'm not marrying you and our relationship is over," I tell him.
"Megan," he calls out in a warning tone, his voice rising in intonation. "Don't make me come down there and drag you back here."
I blink and set the phone down on the bed hitting speakerphone. "You are not coming down here and dragging me home," I insist.
"I could if I want. If you don't come back on your own, you leave me no choice," he responds. His voice is getting more irate by the second. Jai scoots forward and rubs my back in support.
"Do I need to get a restraining order out on you?" I ask him.
He laughs mockingly, "Honey, I own the police. Why don't you try it?"
I look to Jai but he has his phone out. "Are you recording this?" I mouth. He nods. I smile in response.
"So, you want to run that by me again, Spencer? If I don't go back to you, you're going to come down here and drag me back. If I report you for harassment, you think nothing will come of it because of your father's money and influence in the city," I reiterate.
"Exactly," he laughs. "So... what's it going to be?"
"You'll have to drag me because I would never return to you willingly and if I would've seen you for who you are four years ago, I wouldn't have given you a second glance," I tell him honestly.
"Megan, if you make me come down there to get you, I'll make you regret it," he says angrily.
"What would you do?" I ask.
"You don't want to know. You have no idea what I'm capable of," he sneers.
"I'd actually like to know what you're capable of. Please tell me," I request.
"Megan! Stop playing games!" he yells. "Either you get your butt on the first flight back here or I'll be there on the first one out."
"You'll just have to come down and get me. I'm busy. I'd prefer if you left me alone but considering this is call number six, I think I've been patient enough to hear you out. I'm taking some good advice I got and blocking you. Goodbye, Spencer," I say hanging up. I immediately block his number. I sigh in relief.
"I was recording since you answered," Jai tells me.
"Thank you," I say softly.
"I've had too many situations that I should've done so. If you ever run into him again, I recommend you set your phone to record when you see him coming," he says.
"Alright," I nod to the sound advice. "I think I'll do that."
"Can I have your number? I'll send it to you," he says.
I nod in surprise and give him my phone number. A moment later the recording is in my texts. I smile as I add his contact information.
"How are you feeling?" he questions pushing a strand of hair out of my face.
"I'm okay. I'm more irritated than hurt today, I think," I admit.
"I'm concerned about him. Does he usually follow through on his threats?" he asks.
"He's never threatened me before," I divulge. "This is a first. I don't know what he's thinking. He did threaten to tear up my contract twice now, though. He wouldn't keep threatening the same thing if he did it the first time. Perhaps he's all bark and no bite," I say shrugging.
"Were they all phone conversations?" he asks.
"No, the first three were voicemails," I tell him. He asks if he could hear them. I play the recordings.
He nods after they finish playing.  "He is all over the board," he says.  "I... I recorded the conversation yesterday.  My phone was in my pocket but I've got the conversation if you want it."
I stare at him in shock.  "Why did you record it?" I ask surprised.
He shrugs leaning back in his chair.  "Before I came here and a turning point for me to leave the resort was when an obsessive fan interrupted me at brekky.  She got a little too pushy, propositioning me.  I told her no but humored her with an autograph thinking that would get her to leave.  Anyway, she asked for a photo with me.  I agreed to get her to go afterwards.  She sat on my lap to take a picture—not my idea and not welcomed at all.  Then she proceeded to proposition me again.  I confronted her and told her I was recording her.  She got mad and left but had initially threatened to report me.  I told her I recorded the conversation so it'd be no use since I had proof she was lying," he explains.
I'm gaping at this.  "Does this happen often?" I question.
"Not too often but more frequently than I'd like to admit," he divulges.
"So you really recorded the conversation?" I question surprised.
"No, I lied.  But I think I will do that from now on," he tells me.
"You shouldn't lie," I say softly.  "But I'm glad she left you alone without incident."
He nods in reply and sends me the other recording.  I look to my phone seeing it and then back to him.
"We should probably call it a night. I still have my Bible study to do tonight and I have to call my mom or she'll worry," I admit.
"Alright," he responds scooting forward on the chair once more. He pushes my hair aside and touches my face. "Are you going to be okay?" he questions worriedly.
"I'm actually okay," I tell him. "I'm irritated but I'm not that upset. I honestly think he's just blowing hot air and if he does fly here, we'll be gone by the time he arrives."
Jai grins at me. "Yeah," he agrees. "Plus, you have like fifteen men here alone to protect you. We won't let him hurt you. So no worries, love."
My heart flutters at him calling me that. It's just an expression from his culture, I remind myself. And we're just friends.
I walk him to the door. He reminds me that I have his number if I need anything. I thank him and say goodnight. He hugs me again and I respond in kind. I feel a kiss to my head and I can't help but smile. He wishes me goodnight and I sigh shakily as he leaves. I know I'm safe...
