Jai

She puts her things away in her tent and we head out to brekky together.  We sit and eat and talk.  I'm just absolutely entranced with her.  She's so happy and fun to be around.  She's full of all sorts of knowledge that I find surprising.  I guess all my old Aussie stories are something new and unique to her, too.  Everyone eventually joins us but I'm grateful for my one on one time already today.  We separate into groups afterward and I start with the favor for Floyd, then join Jamal's crew once more.  We continue on moving heaps of bricks until it seems as if there's enough for now.  I go back to working at Megan's side to build up the walls.
The days start to meld together.  The walls to the ground floor are finished, then the second level flooring is built up along with the staircase.  We build up the walls higher using the scaffolding.  I spend my days split between moving supplies and brick laying.  My meals are spent side by side with Megan.  We share local home cooked delicacies and continue to build up the school.  The evenings are spent either around a campfire talking or sitting in the pavilion.  Sometimes I can convince her to sing and play my guitar.  Usually it takes me along with several others pleading to sing worship music.  It always works to get her to concede.  Her voice... there's just something about it that draws me in.  It's as if I'm in a trance every time she sings.  I can't get enough of it.
We spend part of a day around lunch in the pavilion.  The downpour just hit out of nowhere.  The temperature has dropped and Megan is actually shivering.  I wrap my arms around her until she stops shaking.  I even see Floyd rubbing Gale's arms, too.  I think there's something going on between the two of them.  He actually winks at me.  I nod my head in his direction and hold her closer.
When the rain stops, Megan rushes off and I follow her to the construction site.  She climbs the scaffolding to the top and I climb up beside her.  We're above the treetops and there's a rainbow in the distance.
"Hey, you two?" I hear Gale's voice behind us.
I turn around to the click of her camera.  "That's a good one.  It even has the sign of the covenant in the background."
"The what?" I ask.
I look to Megan in question.  "The rainbow," she whispers.  "It's a promise from God."
"I thought it was a sign of liking the same sex," I point out.
"Yeah, they've taken something beautiful and turned it into something else.  That's what the world does," she says.
"What kind of promise?" I ask.
She looks over her shoulder but they're gone.  "Have you ever heard of Noah and the ark?" she asks.
"The flood?" I question.
She raises her eyebrows in surprise but nods.
"Yeah," I say.
"After everyone but Noah's family and the animals in the ark were destroyed.  God put his bow in the sky as a promise to never flood the world again," she says.
"So no more judgment?" I ask.
"I didn't say that," she says seriously.
"But he flooded the world and killed everyone, right?" I ask.
"He saved the only family that followed his laws and revered him," she says.
I make a comment about that and she looks away.  She climbs down off of the scaffolding.
"What's the matter?" I ask her when I get down.
"I don't want to talk about it," she says dismissively.
"Why not?" I ask her.
"I believe my God is just," she tells me firmly.
"Just what?" I question.
"Just as in right or correct.  I believe that sin is punished and should be punished.  God is good and right.  He is the only one capable of sitting in the judgment seat.  What he says goes," she tells me.
I realize she's really into this religious stuff.  "I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to pick a fight," I apologize.
She frowns and looks to the ground.  I reach out and hug her.  She hugs me back and I sigh.  I've got to remember not to say anything about her religion that upsets her.  She's so into this.
